Boats / Re: N1111 Frivulus

Frivulus N.2111 was last seen at one of the very first Vintage Twelve Open Meetings, at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, around the early 1990's. It was never seen again, despite enquiries by Towan Hancock. Ask him if there was any later news.

I, too, have a copy of every Newsletter of the previous era, but no duplicates.

Boats / Re: N2300 Duodecimal

Although I reported that Duodecimal had been bought by Chris Veal at Trent Valley in 2013, unfortunately due to other commitments Chris decided he would be unable to sail her. Fortunately Chris's uncle Allen Brunton, of Amble, Northumberland, a Twelve sailor of great skill in the 1960's, stepped in and took over the boat. She was last seen on my trailer heading north to Allen's home in the autumn of 2014.

I new Robin Smith in the late 1950's and think he sailed occasionally at the Welsh Harp - but not in Twelves. I believe he crewed for Mike Evans at Plymouth at one of the Burton's which Mike won.

It is sad for me to report that Duodecimal, N.2300 has been sold (duodecimal system = counting by twelves). She had a happy childhood, was badly neglected in her late teens, was saved from a near-death experience and restored to good health by me, over nearly a 30-year period. Her continued progress has been taken over by Chris Veal of Trent Valley Sailing Club - look out for them!

N.439 "Pepita" and her mast.
I was visiting one of my old sailing haunts, Beer Sailing Club, this last weekend and fell into conversation with another visitor who was the owner of this boat. He decribed that it was berthed at Avon S.C. on the river Severn, many  years ago and was swept away by an exceptional flood. The wooden mast had previously been removed, the gentleman had stored it and he now wants to dispose of it. If anyone is interested in this I can pass on his telephone number.
The gentleman knows Phil Rowley and reports that she is still going strong. His two sons crewed for her in the past.

Since the Surveys of 2007 and 2011, I have continued to log appearances of Vintage Twelves (wooden, clinker-built boats) in order to try and answer the question "How many Vintage Twelves are still around?". I am pleased to say that some old boats which have never been seen in previous surveys, continue to appear, together with some old friends briefly seen in the first survey and not subsequently. I must thank the reporting of Ed Willett, who has been reporting the appearance of boats on ebay very diligently.

I had hoped to publish this update in the autumn but a sad event interrupted this intention, but I hope to publish in the next month or so.

If any readers have boats in a shed somewhere that thay have forgotten about, you have time to let me know. Also if you know of an old Twelve that has been recently broken up, please inform me.

Thank you to Paul for his kind regards about Jean. The start of the service for Jean at All Saints Parish Church, Mickleover, Derby, has been moved forward to 1315 hours on November 5. Thanks to all for your kind thoughts.

N.1340. This boat appears in the 1957 list of boats owned by Trent Valley members as owned by Mike Nokes, who worked for Wyche & Coppock. While throwing out some old issues of Yachts & Yachting I noted that this boat was offered for sale in 1970 by a sailor in Oxford for £65.

Little John, N.803, was sailing in 1952 with its owners and builders, Dick Wyche and Digby Coppock, at Trent Valley S.C., where both were members for a long time.

Geoffrey Bull, the owner of Rampant when they won the Silver National was a member of Trent Valley S.C.. He retired from sailing not long after this win and took up fox hunting.

N.250. Sorry! The previous entry is an error. The boat name quoted and the owner is of an early Merlin Rocket.

N.725, Lady Rowena, was owned in the 1950's by the Archer Sailing Club. This was a sailing club formed by personnel at the Chilwell Ordnance Depot, near Nottingham, which was very large at that time.

My records show that I met this boat at the 1971 Brixham Regatta. (The Regatta was memorable for me, with Jean crewing, for an unusual gear failure!) Hopefully a record of the event and Delusion's result appears below.
