N.1451 "Portly" was owned in 1957 by Douglas Gill (founder of the eponymous sailing clothing Company) of Trent Valley S.C.. Douglas sailed the boat regularly at the club until around 1963. It is not known where it went to from there.

If you are intending to work on your China Doll this winter, or want to lay up your boat - but not on your trailer/trolley - I have in store here a pair of stands profiled to suit this hull. They are NTOA property and were used to carry the Doll which was on display at the 70th Anniversary Celebration at the 2006 Dinghy Show. They were built with a 10 degree sideways tilt for display, but they can be sawn to be level. Anybody interested please collect from Derby. Call me on (01332) 521168.

N.2090 "Pussy Willow" was bought new by Peter and Win Hill of Trent Valley S.C. and they sailed her very successfully at the Club and at Midlands Open Meetings from 1963 to 1967. I dont know where it went after their ownership.

Boats / Re: N2117 Zig-Zag
12 Aug 2011, 06:10
I was recently invited to view this boat, whose owner lives in Etwall, near Derby. The owner states firmly that the boat is called Zig-Zag but it started life as Branston Pickle. It was raced at Burton Sailing Club, whose waters then were at Branston. The present owner has never raced the boat anywhere else, but has sailed it intermittently on holiday in recent years, often in North Wales. The images are of Abersoch.
The boat was advertised on ebay last year, but either attracted no interest or offers were inadequate. Zig-Zag is on the market again. The hull is varnished and the boat looks sound and could be sailed straight away. The interior could do with some minor refurbishment, eg varnishing. The sails which look to be in good condition, are original Ratsey's and there is a spare suit. There is no trolley or cover.
If anybody is interested, please call me in the first instance. My number is in the Handbook.

Boats / Re: N925 Wraith

Re. N.925; I can add a brief postscript on this boat. It was broken up on the Isle of Wight. Dare Barry was able to retrieve some items from the last owner and brought them over to the Mainland. I think it was at the time of the Teignmouth Burton. I have the boom. The rudder went to the owner of N.4 at Falmouth and possibly the mast went there as well.

Re. N.1999, "Squinado". In my previous entry I indicated that this boat is now with Richard Roscoe, creator of the Squid design. Richard's address is
Helwarden,

I am slightly uncertain about the spelling of the name of the house and village, but the above should reach him okay.

Boats / Re: N823 Bubbles

N.823 "Bubbles" was built by Peter Brookman, father of Michael. In 2002 I was invited to go and look at this boat by Andrew Stowe, a Sea Scout, and the boat was at the Loughborough Sea Scouts building. Andrew is the son of Paul Stowe who at the time was the owner of N.1550.
N.823 is a ribbed boat and I found her to be in rather poor condition. The hull was reasonably sound but the plank next to one of the garboard planks had a long crack in it, about a millimetre wide. All the ribs seemed to be okay. The varnish throughout was in very poor condition and there was some need for re-decking.
The heavy wooden mast looked to be sound . There was a fixed rudder. There were two suits of cotton sails; the jibs had galvanised luff wires.
Andrew Stowe was considering restoring this boat but it would be a long job. He would be a rather mature scout at the end of it! I have no idea of what happened to the boat after my visit.

Boats / Re: N1089 Dark Horse

N.1089 "Dark Horse" appeared in public in the autumn of 2005. She was owned by a Mr O.J.P. Hutchinson of 57 Princes Road, Petersfield, Hampshire. After some restoration work that year, the boat was photographed sailing somewhere on the South Coast and we elected her runner-up for the Ribbed Boat Trophy of that year. After that outing the boat was not seen again and follow-up correspondence to Mr Hutchinson was not returned.

Boats / Re: N276 Rain

N.276 "Rain" which, hopefully, is seen on the attached rather poor image, was as far as is known,  a Trent Valley boat and in the picture is rounding the top mark, just below the railway bridge. The boat's owner is E.V.Wagner, and boat and owner were third in the Burton of 1938, which in that year was won by Dick Wyche, also of Trent Valley.

N.2605 "Mendeleev" was built in 1972 of Trent Valley S.C. and was one of a sucession of Twelves owned by Martin Crouch at that time. It was either built, or modified by Martin from a Wyche & Coppock hull.

N.2602 "Shish Kebab" was built in 1972 by a member of Trent Valley S.C.. The hull was made of GRP, the mould taken off the hull of a wooden built 7-plank doll. The boat was taken away from Trent Valley a few years later and I never saw it again.
