South Windermere
8 visitors (mostly from ove't Pennines) came to South Windermere sailing club for a round of the N12 Northern Travellers circuit on 17th May.
The North Easterly wind, blowing over the fells down onto the lake, made for testing conditions, with occasional 20mph gusts supplementing the prevailing 10-12mph breeze. The planing conditions meant that the fleet quickly separated into the modern and vintage boats. In the 1st race
the top 4 were always close. Bernard Clark's early lead was lost to the
Fearnley's featherweight downwind speed. Phil David & Margaret Purkis
came through on the second lap, but again the Fearnleys recovered
through downwind speed to retake the lead. On the 3rd lap Bernard Clark
stormed through on a big gust on the run, and from then was never
headed. Phil got past the Fearnleys again upwind, as did Mark Simpson.
Howard Chadwick & Helen Nicholson was the first of vintage boats and 5th
on the water. In the second race Bernard Clark was first away, closely followed by Phil David and the Fearnleys. Phil was caught by a 'Windermere wipe-out' gust at the gybe and swam. The Fearnleys came through to second, and Mark Simpson 3rd. Howard & Helen were again first Vintage in 4th.
With Bernard having already having 2 wins, he joined in the 3rd race just for fun, but all the minor placings were wide open. At the start the Fearnleys looked good holding out into the middle of the lake in steadier breeze, but they failed to consolidate, and as the wind swung right Bernard took his usual place in the lead, followed by Phil and then Mark. With few passing lanes up the one sided beat, the order remained, and the race results matched the overall results. Howard & Helen again won the vintages.
