General National 12 chat / Whitefriars Open meeting
Last post by edwillett - 04 Aug 2025, 01:26
Counting down with a little over a month to go with preparations well underway, here is a reminder of the Whitefriars Sailing Club N12 Open and Training day over the weekend of the 6th and 7th September. With over 15 resident boats (and with others actively looking) we hope to make this the biggest (numerical turn out) N12 event of the year after Burton Week and the Inland's.
Camping onsite and BBQ/meal planned for Saturday.
Please come and join us!
Msg me if you need further details.
Meanwhile look forward to catching up with some of you at Brighlingsea.

Hi all,

I've recently become the proud owner of a vintage National 12 and I'm quite new to sailing, so please excuse any incorrect terminology — I'm more than happy to be corrected as I learn!

My dinghy is letting in a bit of water, and I've noticed a slight gap between two of the lapstrake (clinker) planks. The wood seems solid, but the join shows signs of movement — the varnish is cracked and jagged along the seam.

My plan is to sand the area around the gap, apply an adhesive, clamp it if I can, and then varnish over the repair once it's cured. Does that sound like a reasonable approach?

Also, could anyone recommend the best adhesive for this kind of repair? I want something strong and waterproof that will bond well with the wood.

Many thanks in advance for any advice or guidance — it's very much appreciated!

All the best,

Simon

Finally after some TLC and repaint ( Thanks David Harris) she has been back out on the water at Whitefriers SC. Just waiting now for the right conditions for an inexperienced sailor to enjoy sailing her. I've added some before and after pictures below.

Hi PCole. Wow, that's a blast from the past. Actually that deal didn't happen; the Alverbank pattens and cutting tables etc went to Jim & Taxi at HD Sails in Birmingham (they make great sails!). If you want to WhatsApp me at paul@ryehillfarm.com I will send you a couple of photos of the logos

Just bought a National 12 dinghy. Stated with two sets of Alverbank sails, they appear to be just Mylar without your name attached. Could you tell me what distinguishing features they should have. Thanks.

It's great to see another 1936 National 12 making it back on the water and hopefully inspiring another generation.

The best plan is to update the National 12 Boat Database with the deatils. Follow this link to the entry. https://www.national12.org/boats/?objecttype=boat&action=viewdetails&id=135

It would be great to see some photos. Selet the "Add your comments" button, then if you hit the Reply button there is an "Attachments and other options" link, click on that and you'll see a "Drag and drop your files here" button. Let me know if that doesn't work.

Happy sailing

She has been in dry storage for 65 years. Built 1936 But now I'm teaching my kids to sail in her. Gorgeous sailer, and built like a tideway so perfect for a bit of swallows and amazons on Windermere! Leaks like a sieve but I'm sure she'll take up with time. Sikaflex will be my friend I think!

How do I add photos? Got some lovely ones - really beautiful boat.
