Boats / Re: N2903 Maxim

I have acquired Maxim. She has been featuring on ebay rather frequently in recent years.
The hull appears sound. A lot of the ropes and fittings need updating. The sails are very tatty.

I have been sailing 2901 occasionally over recent months and been very impressed with her performance on the Thames. Hopefully this Paper Dart will prove to be just as quick.

Event cancelled due to adverse conditions. River flowing strongly and all weather forecasts only showing 2 to 3 mph breeze.
We will look at possible dates for rescheduling.

Conditions for tomorrow not looking good. River is flowing at around 2 knots and upstream the Environment Agency River Thames Conditions website is showing a mixture of strong stream and stream increasing warnings. Flow is therefore unlikely to decrease.
Wind forecasts (XC Weather and Met Office) predict 5 mph breeze which would not be sufficient to make any progress against the stream.
To avoid any wasted jouneys I intend to check river conditions and wind forecasts early tomorrow morning, and then at 8am post an update here on this thread. If conditions have not improved substantially we will announce a cancellation at that time.

As of this morning the weather forecasts are predicting very light winds for tomorrow. As a consequence of recent rain, river flow could be a significant problem. We will make a decision on whether we can race tomorrow morning but I felt it would be appropriate to warn our visitors that there is a risk of cancellation.
I am going to look at the river shortly (and continue watching the forecasts) and will post an update this afternoon.
We are obviously keen to sail and for visitors to join us!

Hi Neal,

I look forward to seeing the end result of your renovation project. Anyone else from Burghfield coming to play on the river?

This is just a quick reminder to potential visitors that the Twickenham Yacht Club N12 Open Meeting takes place on Sunday October 7th.

The home fleet will hopefully be well represented. At TYC we currently have 7 N12s ( 2 Design 8s, 3 Tigress, 1 China Doll and 1 Paper Dart.) with 6 boats out racing on a regular basis.

Sadly we only had 5 boats participating last year so this year I am hoping for something closer to the splendid 12 boat attendance that we had in 2010!

3 races with first start at 11am. 2 afternoon races back to back.

Prizes for first overall and first Admiral's Cup boat.

In the event of a westerly or easterly breeze we will use the usual reach between Eel Pie Island and Richmond, but if we get a northerly or southerly we have the option of racing on the reach between Eel Pie and Teddington.

High water is 19:46 so there will be no risk of any cars getting flooded on the riverside road.

The hard by the White SWan pub provides our visitors with a good rigging & launching area.

Good changing facilities including showers with plenty of hot water.

Lunches and afternoon teas will be available, and of course the bar will be open.

More details about TYC on our new website www.Twickenhamyc.org

I had the same problem on my Tigress. When I removed the non slip I found that water had started to penetrate into the veneer. I caught it in time and hope you may also be fortunate.
Removing the non slip was not pleasant. Lots of nitromors + elbow grease.

Tim. I am not an expert but my suggestion would be that you carefully remove the hardwood strip, remove any loose bits of ply from the floor and then using epoxy glue a thin piece of ply over the original repair,

Make the new piece of ply substantially larger  than the previous one so that it provides plenty of 'grab'. Try 3 mm ply? If you then reglue the hardwood strip onto the plywood repair that should do the trick. Not pretty but functional.

Hopefully one of our wooden boat gurus will be along shortly to offer their advice.

Congratulations on your purchase.
Low temperature is not a problem for sanding but it will be an issue when you start applying the new varnish. It will take a very long time for each coat to go off.
If there is any way that you can get some heat in there it will make your life a lot easier. Good luck and take your time with the sanding.

It is certainly possible to sail a N12 single handed. I do it quite frequently. Some clubs do allow you to race a N12 single handed with a suitable handicap adjustment.
An all up weight of 25 stone is heavy by N12 standards but you would still have fun. In light winds inland you would struggle in handicap racing but in stronger breezes at sea this would probably be less of a problem. If you check through the guide to the various designs on this website it highlights which designs are the best weight carriers.

4 N12s now on the BM pre-entry list. Hopefully a few more may show up on the day.

Currently for sale. Boat is in good condition and has been in dry storage.

How many 12s will be competing at the 2012 Bloody Mary?
Forecast looks promising. 15mph gusting to 30+ and probably dry.
Two 12s from Twickenham YC will be there.

Catatonic will be there.
I am sure the food will be fantastic. When Felicity and Shannon recently did the catering for our Laying Up Supper at Twickenham YC  everybody was very impressed with their cooking skills.

Hi Mandy.

Glad to hear you will be joining us on Sunday.

You can leave your boat in the dinghy park on Saturday. I can open up for you at midday.

Regards
Alistair
