Apologies for the late link, but in two weeks time (Saturday 19th March) the first of the 2016 GUL series- the Burghfield SC Sprint Championships takes place. As last year this is a fast and fun start to the season with as many one lap races as possible being squeezed into the day. Similar to last year again, it will be run in conjunction with the OK's so with two fleets on the water it should be a fun filled event.

significant savings can be made on the entry fee by pre-registration (which does not require payment until the day) Entry without pre-registration £22 and with £17. This includes the £1 donation to the GUL overall prizes for 2016.

For more information please click the link below which will take you to BSC website and follow instructions for registration.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Having been following the earlier thread regarding the future of the 12 and having already started discussion about what we could do to make the class more attractive to potential new owners in our last committee meeting, we agreed to ask 12 owners and interested parties alike what changes we could make to the rules to make the class more attractive and widen its appeal.

With that in mind I would like to encourage as many people as possible  to post ideas and thoughts which they would like included in the debate on this thread, bearing in mind the current National 12 Class Rules. What do you think would make the class more appealing to potential owners and existing owners alike?  Different sail plan/ measurement rules; redefine hull measurement rules/weight etc?
Whilst I understand the frustration of looking back on the 'glory years' of 12 development and sailing, the reality is that few people have time to build themselves in the modern world and so I think it is important as a development class that we look for ways to move forward not backwards. Also bear in mind we are in a competitive and shrinking market.

Should be pointed out that there is currently a plywood interpretation  of a DCB currently in build not a million miles away from where I sail.

For info, we are currently addressing the issue of a recommended handicap for non foiling DB boats.

As can be seen on the database I have spent the last two weeks on the start of a major refit of LUcky Number 2431- Kifi and wandered if there are any other lucky numbers still in existance?
Does anybody know or is Kifi the one and only survivor?

The first event of the National GUL series takes place in a little under two weeks at Burghfield Sailing Club on the 23/24 March.

The weekend starts with a mornings coaching for those that wish to participate and blow the cobwebs off their boats. Coaching will have an early start so that we can squeeze in some meaningful tuition prior to racing.

The racing follows a similar format to the Inlands event at Northampton that has been run in the past, though stating a little later on the Saturday.

Saturday: Races 1&2 back to back from 2pm

Sunday: Races 3&4 back to back from 10am. Racing will be finished by lunch with prize giving after a meal, allowing for a leisurely return home!

Coaching is free, entry for the two days is £20 per entry if you pre-register using the link below and £22 if you enter on the day.

We are planning on either a meal at the club on Saturday evening or a trip to a local chinese or Indian depending on popularity. You can state your preference on the pre-entry form. camping is available onsite if the weather allows but there is also a list of local accommodation on the information event information page using the link below:

GUL series 1 -BSC

Please use the pre-registration system available on the link above so that we can get a good idea of numbers

Thanks
Jeremy (on behalf of the BSC N12 fleet)

PS. if anyone would like to borrow a boat (there is at lest one crusader available)for the event please post here or contact me on the following e-mail address. jeremy(at)designs42.net

As part of thew fantastic new GUL series, which starts in a couple of weeks at Burghfield with coaching and Racing, our title sponsors GUL are offering an end of season prize in partnership with Watergate Bay Hotels of a weekend for two at their luxury sports hotel in Cornwall with surf coaching . A draw will take place at the last GUL event of the year at Northampton Sailing club, those who enter the GUL series get their name in the pot! Each time you participate in a GUL event this year your name will go in the draw- so the more GUL events you do, the greater the chance you have of winning this weekend break.

Details of the first event at Burghfield SC and the ability to pre-register will be posted within 24hrs on the forum, so we hope to see you make the event and and register your first hit at this great prize.

For more information about the grand prize click below:

Poking one foot out of the bed this morning and testing the air temperature should have given me a good enough reason to stay in bed... but no, its Sunday and sailing is what we do on Sundays!

Off to the club then, temperature gauge never deigned to lift itself above the 0 mark on the drive and the bitter  Northerly wind was already set fair as we arrived.

Bacon sarnie it was then, as we discussed the merits of the warmth of the clubhouse. Other craft on the beach were thin and far between whilst TC remained resolutely wrapped up in the relative warmth of her cover, the gentle smattering of snow looking decidedly comfortable on top. Bacon dispatched decisions had to be made, and perhaps I should have followed 'she who knows best' who confirmed that the chance of leaving the warmth of the club room was so far to being close to minimal that I really shouldn't ask!

But inexplicably I just had this urge to sail... can't think why, must be something to do with owning a 12 I suppose. So single handed it was to be then.

Boat rigged in record time, changed and then thought, hey this isn't so bad as I stood on the foreshore waiting for the committee boat to set station and still being able to feel my hands. Off I went, I even manged to keep the main sheet dry on launching (a big plus in my books for the little pinkies happiness).  Wind, just on the limit of single handing upwind, but great for the offwind legs as planing came early.

First beat went well, ahead of a couple of blazes and other fast fleet boats and only blaze and the Icon in front. Single handed PY 1033 so had to work hard. Kept hanging on for a couple of laps, making little headway either forward or backwards against the competition, things going well! Third beat, went the wrong way and lost a good 50m on the Blaze who had been just in front, increasing wind was starting to play against me. Still a lot of offwind on the course so I went all out to really crank her up on the reaches. Shrouds, outhaul, board, all eased and off I flew.

Another gust, went for a bit of kinetics to flatten the boat and .... Bang.... over the side, headfirst into the coldly welcoming lake (I swear it had a grin on its face as it ate me up!)

Result very cold.... NO I mean VERY cold.... firs thought-'really should invest in a dry suit', broken footstrap the culprit, oh and a broken tiller extension in the classic case of denial as one is determined not to accept the inevitable..............

Going to miss that tiller extension, been with us 6yrs and part of the family!

Conclusion,

Should have stayed in Bed!!!! but still :):)

Con-census seems to be that it would be a good idea for all those travelling to Spinnaker to camp in the same place so that we can socialise as a group!

http://www.redshoot-campingpark.com/ seems to be the best bet, closest to club, pub at the end of the road.

If you are coming and camping can you post here!

For this years' Burton Week we are really trying to expand the entries and make the class more visible to other sailors so we are hoping to offer boats to non 12 sailors and we woud really appreicate your generousity in enabling this to happen by coinsidering loaning your boats out if you are not intendeing to go to the Nationals. This will considerably help the class expand as we all know, once you have been in a 12 you rarely want to get out of it again!

So if you have a boat you would consider loaning please ost here with boat name, number and design and we'll see if we can really boost interest in the 12 this year!
Potential borrowers of boats will be vetted as best as possible for sailing ability to ensure your loaned boat is in good hands!

Please be generous it could help the class immeasurably!

Thanks

Jeremy Carey:)

It's getting to be that time of year when I start thinking about the 2012 season National 12 calendar.
With this in mind I am looking, as ever, for the best images of the year which best reflect the class and it's activities over the season.
Could I ask all members who have a stock of images to go through them and mail me the ones you think could fit the bill.

e-mail: jeremy (@) designs42.net

If you want to send a CD please find my address in the handbook or e-mail me and I'll send it to you
