I think, in far too simplistic terms.

1 and 4. Just change the trailing edge of your centreboard into an Aileron. Saw it out the section and put it back on hinged.

2. Some form of control mechanism is need set the position of the Aileron.

3. Assuming a good job is done, in the neutral position the profile would be the same as if unaltered.

Quote from: 572altering the angle of attack of the board

Sorry Tom, but am not sure that statement is correct. The cetreboards angle of attack does not change, the Hulls does. But only strictly true in the limits, lateral resistance by CB >> lateral resistance by hull.

I may be wrong, please correct if so.

Only quickly scan read the document but as a physicist my initial interpretation is...

Don't think of it as the rotation the centreboard but a rotation of the hull to point in the actual direction it is travelling. First instinct would be that the main gain would be that the hull shape will work more as designed (no side ways flow of water against it) reducing drag.
The effect on the rudder is a seperate consideration.
I also suspect the "trim tabs" of DCB have made these obsolete anyway. Though have no idea of what exactly is meant by trim tabs, I assume some kind of flaps to make the CB a Assymetric rather than symetric foil to generate lift at 0 angle of attack.

There will be cheaper than this
I am not hinting!

Ed - Grazz can you fix the "Toggle advanced editor" ( may just be within IE 7 Nope Firefox as well (Strike through button does not work either!)). It is really anoying when no longer recognises any text in editor box when off.

What about the boats on here (if they are still available)

http://www.national12.org/adverts/index.php?catid=4&order=ad_title&way=0
There is a cheshire cat for £500, it would be worth comparing to the one you have found, to see if it is worth £300 more or has £300 worth of extras (i.e. combi trailer, newer sails) etc.
There are a couple of crusaders you should proberly consider.
£800 for a Whisper seems expensive to me, it should be imaculate or filled with extras for that price.
My suggestion would be to go for the cheapest cheshire cat or crusader that is sailable, then upgrade to plastic for the long term in a year or two's time if there is one on the market then, with the added bonus having more wisdom about the class when purchasinbg. (Being a novice I went down the cheapest route, though my plastic paperdart is less of a risk than wood, and it has proved perfect for me.)

Alternatively you could put some wanted adverts on here and apolloduck, there maybe someone who will part with a spare paperdart or taty design 8 with a little push.

Advertised on yachtsandyachting.com, £395.

If "wooden" is an issue, I would suggest waiting
for an early plastic boat (e.g. a paper dart) to come on the market. It will probably
be cheaper than a vintage boat (around £200), low(er) maintenance, and potentially
(theoretically) faster in the fleet race than the older of the vintage designs.

There is only one picture of a N12 to vote for, for the fotoboat calendar next year. It is a good one though. I suggest we all vote for it, to get the picture in.

Though I would never condone vote rigging/fixing, or such like! ;)

Master...
Master...
Master of pupets pulling your striiiiings
(I have had this song in my head for the last week now because of this boat)

Fantastic name and art work. I have every reason to want the boat, the song even played in Rock city last night (I of cause moshed to all 8 minutes 38 seconds of it). I think I have got my first boat crush! But alas I don't have 6k to buy a boat just for a name.
I hope it finds a good home who keeps its "alternative" style and that I'll see Master of Puppets in action soon.
