National 12 - find out more...

Burghfield Gul Series open meeting

16 boats turned up at Burghfield for the penultimate event in the National 12 GUL series. The day dawned bright and sunny, but with the lake like a mill pond. The race officer made the sensible decision to postpone racing until after lunch, so an impromptu paper boat competition was organised. Using paper, straws, stirrers, bottle tops and a lot of sellotape, contestants had to build a boat and blow it the length of a table. The fastest boat was broadly National 12 shaped, but with the addition of J-foils.

After lunch, the wind had filled in and the real boats took to the water for 6 sprint races. There was fierce competition throughout the fleet. Graham & Felix Camm won the first two races, Jon Ibbotson and Rachel Smith took two more first places, with one first each to Nigel & Chris White and Christian Day & Charlotte Stewart.

After racing the competitors were treated to a fabulous afternoon tea with lots of homemade cake.

Blow boat competition

A variety of designs took part in the highly competitive blow boat competition. John Meadowcroft's foiler won, Meds would like to thank the designer Jon Brown.
