North West Norfolk Week

National 12s at North West Norfolk Week 3rd – 10th August 2013.

Following on from the Gul sponsored event at Hunstanton (separate report)the National 12 fleet  turned up at Kings Lynn on Monday for race five. Steve and Joanne Sallis decided to sit out this one and the race became two separate races between Ian and Alex Gore now sailing Nicks Dead Cat Bounce for the rest of the week and Nick Copsey and Stephen Carver now sailing Nicks old(but newer) foiling Feeling Foolish, and Gerry Ledger and Elizabeth Ross against Patrick Elcombe and Carol Shore. Ian and Alex led at the first mark but Nick and Stephen opted for the opposite bank on the run back and took the lead. It was then a very close race right to the finish with Ian and Alex eventually finding a way past just before the finish to take the win with Gerry and Liz holding off the challenge of Patrick and Carol.

Tuesday racing at Brancaster Staithe and Wednesday racing at Wells were both cancelled due to lack of wind. Wednesday evening racing at Burnham Overy Staithe for the Jenny Lee trophy did go ahead and was held in very pleasant conditions with nine boats enjoying a great sail. The race was led for most of the first lap by Peter Miatt and Tanya Copsey, but at the end of the lap they were passed by Ian and Alex who went on to win from Paul and Freya Pelling. At the tail end of the fleet Paul Turner and Christine Preston were having their best race of the week just holding off the challenge of Gerald and Anthony Copsey and Vince and Fiona Phillips.

On Thursday the fleet arrived at Blakeney in no wind and waited for the postponement but the wind arrived in time to give the fleet another enjoyable sail. The race was won by Steve and Joanne from Ian and Alex with Nick and Stephen posting their only result outside the top two. The race for fourth was won by Stephen LyGrys and Catherine Sears who were having their best race of the week.

The first race at Snettisham on the Friday was to be the best race of the week with three boats in contention until the last lap. Steve and Joanne were just first to the windward mark ahead of Nick and Stephen and Ian and Alex. They then led the fleet to the wrong mark until they realised half way down the reach and headed up to the correct mark. Ian and Alex took full advantage to take the lead at the Gybe mark followed by Stephen and Joanne who then had a bad Gybe allowing Nick and Stephen through. The foiling Foolish appeared to have the better speed on the second offwind leg allowing Nick and Stephen to take the lead. At the end of the second beat the foolish still led from the DCBs of Ian/Alex and Steve/Joanne but Ian/Alex regained the lead on the first offwind leg with Nick/Stephen  almost getting the lead back on the second offwind leg. Ian/Alex rounded the mark inside Nick/Stephen with Steve/Joanne just behind. The third beat saw Nick/Stephen regain the lead and Steve/Joanne taking second. The last lap saw no place changes with Steve/Joanne closing the gap at the finish but Nick/Stephen holding on to take their only win of the week and prove that the DCBs can be beaten by a very well sailed foiling foolish.

The second race on Friday saw Steve and Joanne re-establish their dominance and although Nick and Stephen were never far behind they were unable to put in a serious challenge.

On Sunday strong winds and difficult launching conditions meant only two boats ventured out. With Nick heading off to the Merlin Rocket nationals it was left to Steve and Joanne and Ian and Alex to fly the Twelve flag. Ian/Alex flew out of the start line and led at the first two marks but Steve/Joanne then took the lead and sailed away as Ian/Alex struggled to cope with gear failure.

Overall it was a great weeks sailing with thanks going to the NWNSA organising committee
