Naburn Paddle 2013
A predominantly light NW breeze greeted the competitors
for the 2013 Naburn Paddle, sailed on the River Ouse. The
start line had to be taken up river a short distance in
order to get any sort of beating start. The wind on the club
line was just too fickle for the fleet of 10 National 12's.
The first race got off cleanly with most boats being very
line-shy, leaving the way clear for the Final Chapter End
Game, sailed by Nigel Playford and Margaret Purkis and
Little Meg, sailed by Philip David and Dan Phillips to
battle it out. After a lap Little Meg, a 7 plank China Doll,
had established a strong lead which was held to the finish.
End Game was still a good second and Howard Chadwick, crewed
by Helen Nicolson were third sailing their Starfish, Triarda.
Race two, after lunch, took a very similar pattern, with the
same leading positions throughout the race. In the final
race Philip & Dan swapped boats with Ian Purkis & Gary
Holdsworth to try the 56 year old Proctor Mk4a, My Little
Margie. This proved a sufficient handicap to take them out
of the top places and the way was clear for End Game to
record a win with Triada second. Third place was claimed by
Brian Herring and Ros Steavenson sailing N261 Roamer, a 76
year old Uffa King. Special mention must be made of 7 year
old Tom Moss who completed all three races sailing with his
Dad in Complication, having already sailed the previous
evening in the 1938 race.
