Hykeham open meeting

The Hykeham SC National 12 open meeting was held on Sunday 28th April, following on from the U21 championship the previous day. The wind was from SW precisely as forecast, but the forecast of 10-15mph was well on the low side with the wind clocking in at 20-24mph and in excess of 30mph in the gusts. Bizarrely the OOD, Sam Mason, opted to set the course in the east end of the lake again with the wind shifting and gusting off the island, rather than using the relatively clear winds at the West end of the lake. Sam always likes to give the Twelves a challenge.
 
In race 1 Steve and Carole Sallis, took a comfortable early lead on the first lap. Nick Copsey, with Hykeham SC Commodore, Andy Bayliss, drafted in as heavy weather crew, managed to work their way back into contention and by the final beat were challenging again for the lead. Steve and Carole managed to hold them off with a series of cover tacks to win by a boat length.  Luke and Katie Pepper held of the pack to take 3rd.

In Race 2 Nick and Andy were the early leaders with Tom White and Matt Smith and Steve with fresh crew Tanya Copsey closing up on the run. Steve and Tanya managed to get the inside overlap to take the lead. On the next round Nick and Andy, still in close contention, were hit by a vicious heading gust as they rounded the leeward mark and went for a swim. Steve and Tanya took the win with Tom White and Matt Smith 2nd and Nick and Andy battling back to 3rd after their swim.
 
In the final race Steve and Tanya sailed into an early lead with Tom and Matt holding 2nd for most of the race, but on the final lap it was Nick and Andy who, after a poor start, closed the gap on Steve and Tanya. Steve and Tanya were able to keep a loose cover on Nick and Andy to take the win, Tom and Matt followed in 3rd.
