Ripon Gill Series open meeting

The National 12 ‘Gill’ series is drawing to a close for 2010 and the penultimate meeting was held at Ripon Sailing Club on Saturday 2 October 2010.  The nineteen competitors were greeted with a glassy lake on arrival but the breeze kicked in right on cue and held throughout the day, which was bright and sunny – unlike Friday or Sunday!

The first race saw Jon Ibbotson and Charlotte Stewart claim line honours with Christian Day and Sophie Richards battling with Steve Sallis and Stephanie Ricketts throughout the race to finish in that order.  Bernard and Ellie Clark sailed their newly acquired D8 into 4th place, with Nick and Gerald Copsey in 5th.

Ripon

The second race followed the same pattern as the first for the first 3 places, with a short start line making for some interesting shuffling about on the first beat.  Philip and Helen David showed that a well sailed Vintage design can still drop newer designs for dead in the right conditions to take 4th place, and Mark and Emma Simpson had their best race of the day to finish 5th.

The final race saw Clark and Clark over the line, which they had to work hard to pull back.  Ibbotson and Stewart worked hard to claw their way to the front of the fleet, followed home by Day/Richards and Sallis/Ricketts.  The Copseys took 4th place and the Davids were 5th.

Fleet

There was close racing throughout the fleet, and prizes of ‘Yorkshire food goodies’ were presented to the first 5 boats in the double bottomed, Admiral’s Cup and Vintage fleets.
