Blaydon Racea.k.a Tynemouth Sailing Club at Newburn Slipway A midday high tide on Sunday January 30th enabled Tynemouth Sailing Club to host their traditional ‘Blaydon Race’ on the tidal River Tyne west of Newcastle. After a wait for the breeze to arrive the race got underway in a light westerly breeze over a 3 lap course between Newburn bridge and Ryton Golf course. Phil David, crewed by Sue Jones, stretched out a good lead on the first lap which he secured until the finish. Tom Steavenson, sailing his Dad’s ‘Big Issue’ recovered from a poor start to challenge class chairman Howard Chadwick - but he did’t manage to pass. The race was followed by the (now traditional) gathering in the ‘Keelman’ Pub for food and ale after the prizegiving.
