12 Fest Report

During 15th - 16th July, 20 National 12s descended upon Rutland Water for a fantastic weekend of training, tuning and fun sailing.

On the Saturday, Steve Irish, a coach for the British Sailing Club joined us on the water and in the classroom, giving some fantastic advice for everyone in the fleet. The training he gave included a review of our tacking, gybing & mark rounding.

Everyone who attended had a brilliant time and it was great to see some new faces! For those who came or couldn't make it and haven't yet attended a Gul Event, the social side is very similar and the sailing is too - just add generous prizes from Gul. Hopefully we inspired the new faces and look forward to seeing them very soon! A special mention goes to Ollie Meadowcroft for helming his Design 8 throughout the event - superb to see younger sailors at the back and front of National 12s!

National 12 Summer Event Guide

Three weeks of National 12 sailing to look forward to during August!

North West Norfolk Sailing Week
5th - 12th August

You'll be sailing at 7 venues over 8 days along the North West Norfolk coastline whilst enjoying plenty of time to holiday. With early morning or late afternoon racing, the majority of the day can be spent exploring the delights of North West Norfolk. Now in its 68th year, Norfolk Week is always popular with the 12 sailors.

Ready to visit Hunstanton, Kings Lynn, Brancaster, Burnham Overy Staithe, Wells, Blakeney and Snettisham?  If you are, there is still time to book, with more info about the week available here

Salcombe Gin SYC Regatta
13th - 18th August

This year, the Regatta is sponsored by Salcombe Gin, so that should be enough to tempt you down south! If the Gin doesn't cut it for you, there are already 15 National 12s entered into the event. The perfect chance to finish your training for Burton Week!

The social side of the Regatta will enthusiastically embrace the new partnership with Salcombe Gin shown through a Gin and Cocktail bar on the Yacht Club terrace all week and a lively gin and jazz event on the Thursday evening. Special events and benefits are being organised for competitors and there will also be prizes of Salcombe Gin and engraved glasses for class winners.

Burton Week 2017
19th - 22nd August

As Tom Stewart remarked last year at Brightlingsea, if all the attendees invited one of their sailing friends to Weymouth in 2017 we'd have over 80 boats out sailing. Whilst we haven't seen entry at that level for a number of years, it would be fantastic to reach over 40 entries again. Last time we were in Weymouth in 2010 we had a brilliant fleet, lets do that again.

All the Burton Week info can be found here

If you're thinking of attending Burton Week but don't have a crew, helm or boat then get in contact with us and we will sort that. We already have a few helms looking for crew, so don't be shy!

To try an encourage new faces, this year first time helms to Burton Week will receive a 50% discounted entry!

Ben Ainsle won Gold at Weymouth in 2012, you can win the Burton Cup in Weymouth in 2017!

Vintage National 12s at Auction

With the unfortunate closure of the World of Boats Museum / Eyemouth International Sailing Craft Association (EISCA) which extended to the International Sailing Craft Association (ISCA) collection, a number of National 12s have appeared for auction, initially in Berkshire then Eyemouth, then Cardiff.

Over 277 boats were put up for online auction which ended yesterday, Wednesday 26th July. Within the 277 boats up for sale, there were four known National 12s. We're very glad to report that all 4 sold and have briefly outlined the 4 known boats below. The auction catalouge is available to view here

N1 - Gipsy
There was a lot of activity on the discussion group relating to N 1 being up for sale. Last year the NTOA were made aware Gipsy was moving from Berkshire to Scotland. The NTOA attempted to stop that move but Gipsy had already gone! An ex Merlin Rocket sailor got in contact to tell the NTOA that N 1 was due to be auctioned online by 26th July. With some intense late bidding yesterday afternoon, the future of N 1 looked uncertain.

However, we can happily report that due to the teamwork of our chairman Gerald Copsey and Kevin Iles, N 1 is now in their hands. We look forward to hearing about their plans with N 1. Gerald is currently en route to collect her from Cardiff!

N203 - Tabitha
N 203 was part of the ISCA Collection in Lowestoft, Suffolk but after 2006 her location was unknown. As the photo below shows, she needs a bit of work but we are glad she has been found and was sold yesterday. Hopefully her new owner is a National 12 enthusiast and we'll hear about her restoration. She was sold with sails and possibly her rigging.

N432 - Jeanetta
N 432 was also part of the ISCA Collection in Lowestoft, Suffolk and in 2006 she was one of the two N12s left that didn't have a home to go to. It looks like she has been kept in the poly tunnel at Lowestoft. Not much of her previous history is currently known, apart from that she competed in the 1961 Teignmouth Regatta! She sold yesterday, complete with sails, spars and maybe her rigging.

N2402 - Go-Jo
Go-Jo was also part of the ISCA Collection in Lowestoft. Owned by Andy Emms who sold her in 1998 and then regretted it, she was once crewed by National 12 stalwart Howard Chadwick! Yesterday she was sold once again, with her mainsail and boom. Hopefully we'll hear more about her in the coming weeks.

N.B. - For anyone interested, I have a number of photos of N203 and N432. If you can't wait for me to upload them to the N12 database, feel free to reply to this edition of the Latest Chapter and I'll happily forward them on.
