Bob

Both 2600 and 2775 have not been registered with us since the mid late 1970's. The only info I have is from the RYA certification records.
N2775 was at Derwent Reservoir SC, owned J.R.Raine at Shotley Bridge. Co Durham.
N2600 was in Wollaton Nottingham owned by Mr E.N. Duncton.  Nor sure I ever saw her around at that period Michael Brookman may be able to help on that.

Mervyn Cook sent me a reduced copy of the lines for Electroglide as I was due to make the sails for her.

Janet and I were very sad to hear of Terry's death. We worked with Terry closely, in his days as Chairman. He was also a regular customer of mine at Alverbank, and  I remember him being the fastest boat upwind in the big breezes of Pevensey Bay Burton in 1999.

He was always wanting to develop his rig and was the person who encouraged me to change our Twelve mainsail design into the Radial/Clew & Head arrangement now pretty common. He had an experimental ultra light Kevlar sail with carbon tape reinforcing.
He also had an elasticated luff sail which took four people to hold it flat in place to get the correct 3/4qtr. height measurement!

He was always enthusiastic about his sailing and great to be around.

Condolences to Sharon Angela Mike and the rest of the family.

Hello
With regard to reefing the mainsail, using a reefed sail in windy weather is not recommended for any halfway decent sail as it tends to get distorted and it is important to have a proper kicker arrangement.  The best remedy by far is to have an older sail which you can then have cut down to the equivalent of a reefed sail and attach it to the mast/boom etc and still be able to use a proper kicking strap.  If you don't have a suitable sail you can always place an advert on this site for an older sail that you can have reduced.

The usual amount to reduce the sail by is around 700 - 800 mm taken off the bottom of the sail and fitting new tack and clew re-inforcing and eyelets etc and have the foot reshaped.  I am sure any sailmaker would be able to carry out this work. The sail will not be technically legal for racing but when people have used reduced sails no one has objected, and I do remember at least one open meeting being won with a boat using a reduced mainsail, (it was very very windy).

Re the buoyancy, if you are fitting bags try not to drill through any buoyancy tank and try to use sailcloth covers fixed down as well as webbing straps through the bag loops, this keeps the bags tight down as low as possible to give more lift in a capsize.  See pic of covers fitted to a Twelve (though this boat has no rear tank).

Another one of Robin Steavenson's photos, circa 1949. It is entitled Gordon Bailey Planing in Gnome. I think the photo was taken at TVSC.
Nostalgic as my first Twelve was  Gnome N712 Red Duster II.

This is one of Robin Steavenson's photos Circa 1950. Mimulus was at this time owned by Ian Proctor and shows that the boat had side buoyancy tanks as well as bags in the bow and stern.  Also shows an early centre mainsheet system.

Nice to see that you have a Twelve again.

As you are currently a full member of the Association you just need to re-register the boat in your name.  You can do this on line under the 'Register your boat' tab, pay £10 by PayPal and either scan and email or post the certificate to me.  If you want to send a cheque for £10 and the certificate by post instead thats ok.

Hi Will

Good to see you have bought a Twelve and look forward to meeting you at Pevensey for Burton Week.  The dinner dress code is 'smart casual' (i.e. not shorts/T shirt, a odd suit appears from time to time).

Don't miss the early entry fee deadline of 27th July which is also the closing date for the prize draw for a 1/2 price P&B jib.

Pevensey SC is a good Burton Week venue with everything on site, camping, car parking etc, the dinner venue is as you say just around the corner.

If there is anything else you would like to know please get in touch with us.

Hi Matt

Good to see you back in a Twelve.  As John has outlined the reasoning for the difference in sail size, the actual changes, which came into force in 2007, were...

the crosswidths calculated under Rule 11.3.6 have been changed such that the amount added in each width calculation has been changed as follows:

On the 1/4 height the amount added has been reduced from 470mm to 395mm
On the 1/2 height the amount added has been increased from 565mm to 595mm
On the 3/4 height the amount added has been increased from 530mm to 580mm

Consequently the new sails are wider from the 1/2 height upwards, but possibly narrower from the 1.2 height downwards.  Assuming that a sail was measured at the time of manufacturer under the relevant rules it would be legal to use on the boat.  As long as the foot length is correct for both sail calculations, either of the sails could be used.

Will we see you at Burton Week at Pevensey Bay?????

Camping or Campervan space is available on Friday and/or Saturday.  The club just need to know who is coming and what time.  They will arrange for someone to be there to make sure the site gate is open and close it when everyone has arrived.  If you let us know we will put you in touch with the club representative.
