General National 12 chat / Re: Jib Cleats on our Waller Foolish
« on: April 01, 2018, 06:05:37 PM »

On my boats I always had a cleat on the windward side near to the shrouds, so that the crew can cleat the jib by their side, (if they are sat up to windward), and they can use the other one if sat to leeward.
You should have ratchets blocks so that the crew can  easily play the jib when un-cleated.

General National 12 chat / Ian Proctor Centenary Rally 2/3rd June
« on: March 23, 2018, 04:58:22 PM »
The Class has been approached about the centenary rally which is in Ian Proctor's honour at Bosham Sailing Club, in Chichester Harbour.
The plan is for a Concourse d'Elegance on Saturday followed by a centenary dinner.  On Sunday there will be some gentle harbour sailing with a grandstand finish and various prizes.  There will be special visitors and the event will showcase the various classes which Ian designed as well as the hull designs he created for the Twelves (and other development classes).

We know that the current active vintage Twelve fleet does not include many of Ian's designs but we are sure that someone with one would receive a welcome at this event.  We are also aware that this clashes with an anniversary event at Yorkshire Ouse.

Please contact us if you are interested in this and I will let you have the full details.

General National 12 chat / Re: Shrouds
« on: March 10, 2018, 09:43:29 AM »
This method of attaching shrouds to the mast was pioneered by Needlespar in the 70's.
They used a solid aluminium for the pin, which was ,with some work, removable and the shrouds could be replaced and a new pin ( supplied by Needlespar) could be fitted.

Proctors followed suit but used a hollow stainless steel pin, which was difficult if not impossible to remove.
It would not be wise to remove the pin if you cannot replace it. The damage shown on the second photo is not clear, but the shroud slicing down the mast was very unusual unless a rigging failure has put an different stress on the shroud.

You could look at fitting T Terminals but this may result in the shroud attachment point moving too far up or down relative to the jib halyard point.
Also Old fashioned tangs could be fitted but this is pretty messy.

If the shrouds are fitted significantly more than 100mm above the Jib halyard, the mast have more pre-bend (and will be more flexible in the gusts). If the shroud point moves down the amount of pre-bend will decrease.

Hope this helps

General National 12 chat / Howard Elcock
« on: August 03, 2017, 03:12:22 PM »
We have today received the sad news that Howard Elcock has passed away.  Howard was a stalwart of the Class particularly in the Northern area.  He became a member in 1967 and owned eight boats over the years until 2010 when no longer owning a Twelve he became an Associate member.

In recent years he spent a lot of his time in Greece and it was there that he passed away and was buried in the country he loved.

Howard's sister who gave us this news also informed us that there will be a memorial service on the 3rd September at All Saint's Church, Gosforth, Newcastle on Tyne.

General National 12 chat / Vintage & Fest lost property
« on: June 29, 2016, 07:44:23 PM »
After everyone had left Burton SC to go home on Sunday afternoon an Ergolife Stol had been left behind.  It was assumed to belong to a Twelve visitor, probably a camper.  It appears to be brand new.

If anyone has lost this, or knows who it might belong to please contact us.

Hi Alan
Didn't make the connection!
I would check the mast - The rig height hasn't changed 6.100 mtrs from the sheerline( to  the top band ). And I would expect the boom to be at 5400-5490 from the top band.
On looking at the Pics on the boat Database , taken at Henley SC, the boom does look exceedingly low and the sail is way above it. N 3220 had a 3490 mm
Luff length according to my certificate info.
