The N12 should be an attractive package because it is prettier, lighter, smaller than an RS200 (and a merlin)
The negatives are: it's more expensive to buy new, you need to be light for an adult crew, it has no spinnaker.
It's a 12 foot boat - the weight thing is tricky to solve - but carbon helps! Another suggestion is to develop a single hander handicap and allow single handed sailing at club level.
There is a tension between protecting investment and development. But while development is a possibility, some clever person could reinterpret the rules and come out with a winning design - which would get everyone to shift. The problem is that recently, any idea that has been discussed has met with the response 'thats not what the spirit of the rules mean...' and the impression the rule set is getting ever tighter. Perhaps secrecy is the answer - just do it in the current rules and turn up at burton week and reveal all!
It should be one of the cheapest ways into sailing, because constant development should devalue the boats fast and make them affordable (even cheap!) But see point above, there is definitely glass ceiling between single and double bottoms.
The spinnaker is easy to solve really - allow it for club racing and develop a new handicap. Keep it out of open meetings. And it is a retro-fit to any boat that could be DIY or a kit supplied by Aardvark, P&B etc. (new business for the sail lofts as well) - certain hull designs would be better for spinnaker, thus probably spurring on development.
It would be a very interesting (and novel) proposition if the N12 was a) pretty b) light c) small and d) flexible (solo, crew, crew with spinny)

I have found a courier who will hand deliver - no packaging required! If anyone wants something delivered, he is always going up and down the country so he might be a good bet.
Hi name is Mel - i will give his phone out on request

He will also tow

From what I have read...

Longer the more stable going downwind, but more drag upwind.

Thicker section gives more lift in the sea (12-15%).

The NACA 63 section is theoretically the best, with the thick point further back from the leading edge, but this only works when angle of attack is zero degrees. If angle of attack is bigger than 3 degrees the NACA 00 profile's higher lift makes it optimal.

So if there is a long downwind leg in windy conditions, use a high aspect rudder, with a thicker NACA 00 12 section.

But i'm just relaying what i have read - not from real experience

Does anybody have any experience with different carriers for transporting sails? I'm looking to post some to the south coast this week

FOR SALE - 2004 set of Pinnel and Bax sails; Dacron jib, Pentex main. I bought these from John Meadowcroft last year just before buying a new boat which came with a great set of sails.
I have never used the main and only used the jib once (at Northampton in November 2007). I have decided they ought to be be being used by someone rather than sitting in my garage. They come with battens and a black Pinnel and Bax sail bag. £350 ONO (which is what I paid for them, I believe)
ALSO FOR SALE - an oldish polyester Hyde Mainsail - suitable for training or windy weather - comes with a Hyde sailbag but no battens. £50 ONO
My number is in the book - otherwise email
Philip (who will be putting this on the ad section as soon as the password is reset!

Howard,
unfortunately my sailing season has been completely wiped out due to an achilles tendon tear in january, and a re-rupture in april - so i'm in a plaster cast for another 8 weeks and then gentle rehab - I am looking at october for my next possible open meeting!

I would just like to encourage all those non-competitive N12 sailors to give the open circuit a go. It's not always about winning, or even preserving dignity. Our first ever open meeting was at tynemouth - it was the most fun i've ever had in a boat! I would encourage anybody to attend this event if they can possibly do so. Sailing out of the mouth of the tyne into the north sea is something else, and tynemouth priory in the background is quite awe inspiring. Both myself and my crew were/are rank amateurs and the boat was in poor condition really, with lousy sails, but none of that mattered. It is the only time i have ever sailed on the sea and it was a blast!

I have been to open meetings at ripon, scaling, pitsford and tynemouth - each quite different. From my 'rear of the fleet' perspective, a large meeting like northampton gill series is not as fun as the smaller event - i definitely don't feel as involved in the large events. With the smaller events, you do feel part of it, and 10-20 would probably be ideal in my book (10th or 20th dosent sound as bad a 35th or 50th) I do however understand that the club expect numbers to show up because they have cancelled club sailing to put on the event

I'm only likely to do one day events - Northampton is an exception because I have relatives there. I think the most sensible suggestion to come from the thread is to pair up events one for saturday and one for sunday (perhpas the sunday being mixed in with club sailing, and a separate start for the N12's?)
Youth - how about a youth helm only event once a year, 3 races. if we give it a fixture, perhaps the youth will rise to the occasion? if this is too ambitious, perhaps allow adult crews.

very depressed, I have just re-ruptured my achilles this afternoon. After 13 weeks of plaster and rest I am back to square one!
I hope you all have a good time at ripon tomorrow, I'm only sorry we could not be there with you. I was hoping my son would take the boat out...

no prob - just thought i would ask before I started adding the events to my ipod!

I don't suppose anybody has already added a lot of events to a calender that can export an iCal file have they? if so you couldn't email it could you?
