Boats / Re: N2516 Cliff Dweller

I think I ought to add a bit more about this boat. Its first owner was the late Clive Robinson of Trent Valley S.C., who did very well with it, winning many races and trophies in the early seventies. It was then bought by Derek Armstrong of the same club around 1977. The next owners were Phil Jones - thought to be of Nottingham S.C. - and R.G.Forrest.
I last saw the boat in 2000(?) at Earlswood Lakes S.C. where I noted that it did not appear to have been looked after very well and had a hole in the stern quarter. The next year I visited ELSC, the boat had gone and I was told that it had been written off. I was surprised at this because I had felt that it was capable of being saved.

In the 1957 list of boats at Trent Valley S.C., Excalibur is shown to be owned by Arthur Richardson, for many years Commodore of the club and now Commodore Emeritus.

Boats / Re: N551 Myth

Myth was owned and probably bought new by G.A. "Tony" Pillatt, who, with his father and son were long-standing membrers of Trent Valley S.C.. If I remember rightly, Tony's sister Mary(?) married Dick Wyche. Tony achieved some very good places in his previous Twelve at Burton Week before WWII. I am not aware of how Tony performed in Myth.

Boats / Re: N1121 Purgatory
11 Dec 2010, 09:08
As far as is known, Purgatory was always a Trent Valley boat. In 1957, it was owned by Mr. & Mrs P.E.J. Hunt and always named Purgatory. In its heyday, Purgatory was a very successful club boat. Joe Hunt was a Commodore of the Club. The boat left Hunt ownership in around 1971/2. It turned up a couple of years later in the ownership of the nearby Trent College school. For boats left to, or bought by, the school this was inevitably their last home.

Boats / Re: N377 Giselle
11 Dec 2010, 08:54
The image shown on the database of Giselle was probably taken before WWII. In its later years, or last years, the Trent Valley boat was owned by "Dicky" Trease and was seen by me at the club in 1961 or 1962. It was probably broken up after this.
Dicky was a well loved and popular member of Trent Valley. In recent times when the National 12 class re-awarded the Admiral'a Cup for almost any boat which was not double-bottomed, Trent Valley created a new trophy for Admirals Cup boats at its major annual Open Meeting. The new trophy was named the Trease Trophy in memory of Dickie.

Boats / Re: N580 Phantom

From the start of its existence, Phantom was a Trent Valley boat, owned by the Gill Family and from 1957 by Jean Gill. In around 1961 or 62 it passed to David Horder. It disappeared off the TVSC list of boats in 1965.

I have just been tearing up some old issues of Yachts and Yachting and the issue of March 1965, recorded that Sea Sled was indeed sailing at Whitstable and by a Mr.R.Davies.

Sometime in this spring I offered to undertake a census of all the Vintage Twelves still around (clinker-built, wooden boats). You may remember that I published such a list in 2004; it seemed a good idea to do this again for our 75th anniversary.
Howard Chadwick agreed with this and I have been quietly collecting a list of candidate boats since then, much helped by our Class Archivist Ed Willett and his scrutiny of ebay. When I announced this Census earlier, I asked that all Vintage Twelve owners who read our Discussion Board to let me know of the boats that they owned, even though I had some knowledge of many of them. Unfortunately the response was patchy.
Please could all those who haven't done so, please send to me a 'one line' email of their vintage boats owned to, goddards.peartreehouse@btinternet.com or phone me on 01332 521168.
It is clear from the data compiled so far that the list is going to be a lot shorter than that of 2004, but be aware that that was assembled from up to 4 years work, not one year, as this one. There are reasons for this and I will discuss this when I publish in 2011.
It is clear from what is expected to be a shorter list that the Vintage Twelves that remain will become a an increasingly rare and valuable collection. Keep those old boats in good repair!

Yes, John. Put me down for one of the good quality versions. I suggest a navy blue tie with a single Steve LeGrys class logo in light blue and white. I will send my entry in the photograph-of-previous- ties to you separately.

Good idea to use the Uffa King stands for N.1 - maybe at the Dinghy Show? - but Ian Purkis has them now. Better ask him if he has saved them from firewood.

"734"
I have a Proctor drum on the kicking strap on my boat. If you would like to email to me, so that I can get your email address, I will send to you a sketch of the arrangement that I use. I will also send to you a copy of a page from the programme of the 1961 Teignmouth Regatta which shows that Porky won one of the races.

Tim,
I have found a copy of the article in "Yachting World" of March 6 1936, wherein are the lines of the Uffa King. I used these lines, enlarged, to create the stand for "Witch" N.153 at the 2006 annual Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace, where we exhibited 5 boats. If these lines are what you are looking for, I will post them to you straight away- please advise address.
The stand itself might be useful to you. I think this is the stand which I delivered to Ian Purkis, for his restoration of a ribbed boat from the ISCA collection. However remember that the stand is inclined at 10 degrees to the vertical.

Boats / Re: N2765 Le Shed

Attached below is a picture of N.2765, launched as "Kitten", under construction from the Impact Boat's kit.
The image shows the garboard being clamped and glued to a stringer (the latter being the owners supply,
not an Impact Boat's part).

Boats / Re: N1778 Peri

This boat was launched by a then friend Robin Smith, who was a fellow engineering student at Northampton Engineering College, (now City University). I saw the boat when he brought it to the Welsh Harp, London, in about 1959. I think was a member of Chipstead Sailing Club. He went on to be a Captain at British Airways.

I attach, hopefully, a nice picture of Witch being sailed by Brian Miatt and Margaret Purkis at the 70th Anniversary Regatta at Pitsford.
