The accompanying photograph, which unfortunately has not scanned very well, shows Wrath, N.323, rounding the top mark during a club race at Trent Valley S.C. in 1938.

In 1952, when it is believed the attached photograph was taken, "Zoe" was owned at Trent Valley by John Morley. By 1957 it become by John Royce.
The image is unusual that it is clearly very windy, as shown by all the spray around, but there seem to be three persons on board! Note that this is before Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station was built!

N.886 "Flare" appears in the Trent Valley Fixture Card and Boat List in 1952, as owned by P.E.J. "Joe" Hunt. Joe probably bought this boat new, from Wyche & Coppock. By 1957 this boat had moved on.
She was seen by me in 1963, rather a long way away, at the annual Regatta held by Beer Sailing Club in E.Devon. I believe that the then owner of the boat lived in Taunton. After that she disappeared from view.

I have heard lately (April 2011) that "Squinado" is in storage at the farm of Richard Roscoe in Dorset.

Here is another picture of N.2765, Kitten, in her very early days,
late 1970's leaving the shore at Parkstone Yacht Club at the
start of one of the races of the Parkstone Plates meeting for
National Twelves. Helm is owner/builder Ken Goddard.

While talking to an old friend in Poole about a Squid design, N.1999 Squinado, I found that he knows Richard Roscoe quite well, and has given me Richard's address. I will pass this on to Howard and the Secretariat. My friend thinks that Richard will be very interested to hear about the Anniversary activity.

The owner of this boat between 1992 - 2005 was John Pearson (not as spelt in the list above). He was a member of Earlswood Lakes S.C. and sailed in one or two of the Vintage Twelve Open Meetings which were sailed there. When I last saw the boat in the 2000's it was in excellent condition. I understand that John moved to the West Country.

This was a Trent Valley boat at a stage in its career. I first came across her in 1982, when she was owned by Mick Bridges, who sadly died during the last few days. I will endeavour to find out more about her.

Boats / Re: N2191 Frith

Here is some more on N.2191. In 1965 and 1966, when named Altair, she was owned by a Mr P. R. Hunt of Torquay. In 1967 , sailed by a Miss  V.Dobson, she sailed in the National 12 race at Brixham Y.C. Regatta, which was one of the events in the Royal Torbay Regatta.
Somewhere around 2002/2003 she was bought by  Chris Sewell, who had just got out of Zimbabwe in time and had settled in Lymington. By this time the name had changed to Frith. On occasions Chris sailed the boat to the Isle of Wight and back, singlehanded. In 2003 Chris bravely arranged a Vintage Twelve Open Meeting from the Lymington Town Sailing Club. Unfortunately only 4 boats turned up and there wasn't much wind but we had a pleasant series of races.
I lost touch then with the boat  and Chris and a couple of years ago, she was bought by Mike Ricketts, also of the Lymington Area. Mike has now put the boat up for sale on ebay. From the photographs, she seems to be in excellent condition.

In connection with the 75th Anniversary of the class and our reflections on the heritage of our classic dinghies I offered to the Chairman a couple of years ago, that I would undertake another census of the Vintage Wing of the class and try to establish how many Vintage - ie wooden, clinker-built boats - were still around. I announced this census about 18 months ago and have been monitoring and collecting reports of Vintage Twelve ownership since then.
The census will be conducted in a similar manner to that which I organised in 2004 and the results will be published around the end of March, in time for the opening of the sailing season in our 75 th Anniversary Year.
This is a reminder to any owner of a Vintage Twelve who has not so far contacted me about their boat(s) to email to me by clicking on the email box at the bottom of this page. Apart from giving me your name and the boat's sail number, I should like to know in what area/town the boat is berthed or sailed and, in a word or two, whether the boat is race-capable/merely seaworthy/under restoration or whatever. You could also phone me, on           01332 521168.
Thanks and good sailing,
Ken Goddard (N.2300 Duodecimal)

Boats / Re: N1425 Zoe

N.1425, "Zoe" was a Trent Valley boat, owned in its later years by John Morley. The picture previously submitted shows the boat heading up the Trent from the TVSC clubhouse towards the so-called "doldrums". Zoe was sailed very competitively up to the early 1960's even though by this time, the much better Proctor Mk.8's were becoming widespread.
Zoe was also one of the six boats used in a special sailing match (in Twelves) when an American Universities sailing team visited Trent Valley in around 1959.

Mutineer was owned in 1957 by John B. Mason of Trent Valley S.C. and he was probably the first owner. John was a very good sailor and went on to own a number of later Twelves - see on.

Boats / Re: N1420 Jumble Sale
27 Mar 2011, 08:18
This boat, N.1420, has had a long history in the public eye, most of it at Trent Valley S.C.. In 1957 it was called Perseverence and owned by Eric Lee. By 1960, it was still owned by Eric Lee and family, but renamed Tolerance. It was then owned by David Mathews who renamed it again, then as Jumble Sail and sailed the boat very successfully in club races. It then turned up with Brian Herring and his crew Ros Stevenson, at Redesmere or Winsford Flash. Not sure where N.1420 is now.

Mallard sailed in the first National 12 Open Meeting at Trent Valley S.C. in 1937. I have a photograph of this but can't seem to scan it down to a size that will meet the requiremnets of the database.

The first owner of this boat was a Mr. N.B.Broom, of the Teign Corinthian S.C.. I note from my scrapbook that I sailed against her in the National 12 class races at the 1970 Royal Torbay Regatta. She was helmed then by Gavia Wilkinson-Cox, who put the boat up for sale a year or two later, for £175.
The lady helm then, was to an extent, more interesting than the boat. In recent years Gavia Wilkinson-Cox has turned up as a major organiser of racing in the Solent and at Cowes Week. National Twelve sailors shine everywhere!
