No parking problems this year. High water is at 7am.

If anyone has crew problems please let me know and I will try to find someone for you.

The Twickenham YC N12 Open Meeting takes place on Sunday October 2nd.

There will be three races. One in the morning and two back to back in the afternoon.

First start 11am. Briefing at approx 10.30am.

Trophy for first overall and another for the first AC boat.

Last year we had a fleet of 11 boats and excellent conditions, so we are hoping for an equally good event this year.
We had a number of young sailors last year. Indeed the overall winner was Arthur Henderson (then 17) crewed by Abigail Croft (then 15).

It would be good to see 'local' sailors from Ranelagh and Desborough

Visitors will launch from the hard by the White Swan pub.

The bar will be open at lunchtime and after the racing. Lunches will be available.

I would be grateful if people who intend to come to Twickenham could let me know on this thread so that we can plan our catering arrangements.

Hi Mike.

Amy and I are planning to be there.

I am picking up some 'new' sails at Ranelagh, so this will hopefully be the last outing for my rapidly disintegrating 10 year old laminate sails.

Brilliant filming and editing! I have watched all of the films several times, with the volume turned up!
I think the black & white film is particularly dramatic.

I hope we can look forward to more films from you in future.

Well done Tim. That is a fantastic video! One of the best ever N12 videos.

Great dramatic/dreamy music. I like the choppy style and the unusual close up shots.

Just published by the RYA. 12's PY number has been cut by 2.

According to our centenary  history pamphlet ('Sailing on a Maintained Level') the Thames Challenge Trophy has been sailed for every year since it was first presented by Twickenham YC in 1936.

The 'deed of gift' for the trophy allowed the race to be sailed at a venue chosen by the previous years winner and it therefore travelled up and down the Thames. However ever since 1959 the race has taken place at Twickenham.

Digging through a locker at the clubhouse yesterday evening I found a very similar old trophy. It was slightly bigger than the one we have just recovered but it has not been engraved. Perhaps this was also to have been awarded as a 'keepsake' trophy?

My research continues.

Trophy arrived safely today. Seller has advised me that he bought it from a house clearance stall at an antiques fair.

As it has a specific date, is relatively small and is the same shape as the 1936 Thames Challenge Trophy (which is awarded to the winner of our TYC Open Meeting) our current theory is that this was a 'keepsake' trophy for the winner of the Thames Challenge to keep.

As to why no winners name was engraved on it, well perhaps the race was not sailed because of bad weather/river conditons, or the winner took it away and didn't ask to have it engraved. Who knows? We will do some digging through old club records.

Rather than award it we plan to make it part of a permanent display at the club.

I managed to secure the old trophy on behalf of Twickenham YC, and at a reasonable price. Thank you for not bidding against us!

I am hoping the seller may be able to supply some recent history.

A N12 trophy originally presented by Twickenham YC in 1942 (Thames Challenge Cup) has appeared on e-bay. At TYC we are very keen to recover this special piece of the club's heritage.
I thought I would flag this up in case someone else in the class was considering bidding  for this old N12 trophy. I am hoping not to have to pay a fortune outbidding other interested parties!
Thanks

The 12s did extremely well. Graeme and Zoe 5th, Jon and Sophie 7th, Tom Stewart & Rachel 12th.
5 N12s in the top 30. A total of 8 N12 s took part.

Overall winner an International 14.

238 boats entered, but only 195 finished as the strong winds during the first hour took their toll.

Crewing in the RS 200 was fun but missing our start, a capsize on a gybe and a problem with the way we rigged the kite resulted in 178th position. I think I had better take Catatonic next year.

I will be there, but not in a 12. I am crewing in an RS200, and hoping to avoid swimming!

I am planning to have a double floor fitted to my Tigress, and would appreciate some guidance.

My intention is to have a standard height double floor from the thwart back to the transom and a separate low floor forward of the thwart. Hopefully the existing self bailers will work more effectively as any water will collect in the gap between the sections of floor where the self bailers are.

The wooden boat building guide on this website specifies 6mm ply for the floor but I am hoping that in order to minimise weight we can use 4mm ply. If I use additional floor supports (3mm ply) will 4mm ply be adequate?

The Tigress has a lot of rocker so I am hoping that despite only having a low floor in the forward section I will have enough buoyancy under the floors to be able to dispense with the buoyancy bags.

There are now a few photos of the race on the Ranelagh SC website.
