Thanks for the comment Matt,  great answer had not thought of it like that.
I am kind of used to the Carbon rig though from other boats.

I will have a look through the piggy bank and see what we can stratch too.
If the boom is the option.  Should I just be hunting for weight?  How easy or dificult is the home build?
manufacturers?

Sorry about all the questions.

What's the idea behind a carbon boom, is it just weight?  I can;t imagine it having the same impact as the mast?
#33
That puts a dampner on that idea then!!

I din't they would be that much as I can buy a mast for the Vareo for 400 and that was at LDC prices!!
Might have to a have a rethink!

Thanks Antony.

General National 12 chat / Carbon Mast
17 Mar 2007, 12:31
Having spent the day on the stand at the boat show looking at the nice full carbon rig, and getting depressed and how mine looked in comparison, I am considereing making the plunge to a carbon mast?

Anyone got any ideas of the best manufactures?

Anyone got one going 2nd hand?

Sorry for the extremely random and off topic post but thought it would be wortha try!

Basically I am looking for a work placement for a month away from my PhD.   I want a placment doing some kind of design in the marine industry (preferably sailing) and that's where you lot come in!!  I dont even want paying!

I am sure some of you are in or know someone that could help me, :-/

Give me a mail or post if you think you could help.

Thanks and sorry for the random post,

Jon Paton

Fancy wetting our appetite with a few more details?

I watched a program on the design of the BMW Oracle team ACC baot last night.  They still do a lot of tow tank on 10ft models.  They tow them at different speeds  recording drag and then compare them to each other.  Big tank!
It looked pretty cool :-)

bethwaite talks about this technique of 'the 'balance' method of tow testing in one of his books.  Keeping one boat as a reference. can't find it at the mo. but will keep hunting.

Janey,
To a certain degree I totally agree but...

If you do not understand the issues then progress can only be made by trial and error.  If you can learn the reason why a boat planes quicker or easier or whatever then you can create a design that maximises these reasons.
However to stick up for your comment I also am not sure whether this trial will actually create and results worth having, but it might be good fun trying!

p.s. I think I have stood on about 3 fences there!

Is it just because they have found where we are, if we changed it to a slightly different url would that work?  e.g.http://www.national12.org/blahdocs/blah/blah.shtml

Not sure how these critters work but it might help.

Jim,
I am keen and if do not end up going away with work I will be there, but I unfortunately cannot commit.  If I am there I would be happy to use photogrammetry to create profiles of the hull shapes.  Would give us a pretty accurate idea of the actual shapes of the hulls.

No i meant the wake boarding lakes that have a wire that towes you round rather than  a boat.  It would be difficult to pursuade them to help but would cut out the wake issue.  You have to be careful to make sure the way the boat  towing does not affect how it would plane.

i.e. if it was towed from its bow it might have a tendancy to lift or sink it depending onw here the tow was in comparison.

I would be interested but not sure how easy any of it would be to do and whether it would be of any use to anyone!

If it goes ahaead i might be able to help with measurement equipment if you decide what you want/neeed.

How about a wake or water ski lake and the cable?

I am going to varnish and not epoxy this winter.  No need for the epoxy in my opinion just adds weight.  Especially as I am sureyou will look after her.  If you are a lazy bones and will leave it for months at a time at the dinghy park with water swimming in the bottom that is different but aslong as you take care, varnish is simpler, easier, less hassle to put on , sand and get a better finish.  In my opinion:-)

The whole idea of a rotating mast is to reduce the seperation around the mast and increase the lift available.  If you then stick a pole down the side of the mast it's kind of a waste in adding the complexity of the rotating mast.
