The crew shortage has raised its head again. Are there any spare crews out there likely to available be in the Weston area this weekend?

The fourth event of the
GILL NATIONAL 12 SERIES 2005
will take place at
WESTON SAILING CLUB
on
11th & 12th June 2005

It would be helpful if those of you expecting to take part would please let me know by posting a message here, by email at kiles1uk@yahoo.co.uk, or by telephone on 01702 476734.

Weston is great venue, within easy reach of the motorway network and offering some of the best estuary sailing in the country. The first start on Saturday is scheduled for 12.30.

For full details please see the Gill Series area of this web-site or refer to your Gill Series packs sent out earlier in the year.

Thanks to everyone who has contacted me to say they are coming along this weekend, it looks like it could be a bumper turnout. For those of you who are still unsure, the BBC Weather web-site this morning is suggesting sun with winds of 17 mph on Saturday and 11 mph on Sunday. What more could you want?

The open meeting at Thorpe Bay is scheduled this year for 4th and 5th June. Briefing on Saturday will be at 10.00 followed by 2 races with the first start at 11.00. First start on Sunday will be 10.30 followed by 3 races. The sun will shine and we will have a steady SW force 3-4 all weekend for some great sea sailing.

Entertainment on Saturday evening is a party in the clubhouse with the theme of "Shipwrecked". Fancy dress is optional. As usual there is plenty of floor space at the Iles house and a blind eye wil be turned to the odd tent at the side of the club. The chef has been told that breakfasts will be needed.

It would be helpful if those of you planning to attend would either post a message here, email me at kiles1uk@yahoo.co.uk, or call me at the number in the book or on the fixture list.

I am not aware of anyone taking any "still" photos, but if there are some out there please let me know and we will see what can be done to publish them. Graham Camm has some video taken from the rescue boat and I am sure he will supply you with a CD of it at cost price if you are interested. A shakey still from the video is posted next to the report which is now on the Gill series section of this site.

Finally Roger, I can supply pictures of Lesley's rear in a brown envelop if you are really that interested!

Yes, we had great conditions, force 3-4 all weekend, sun. There was cake so Mike was happy. The Derwent club team whipped us in the Teacher's Quiz on Saturday night and took the chocolates. Kevin fell out of his boat at the start of the 2nd race and his crew yelled "MAN OVERBOARD"! Oh, and a blue boat won. If you are more interested than that, you should have been there, it was a great weekend.

Results should be available on the web-site tomorrow evening.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply either here or direct to myself, more advices are still welcome. It looks like there will be a reasonnable or better turnout this weekend so long as the crew shortage does not get any worse. IF THERE ARE ANY CREWS OUT THERE LOOKING FOR A SAIL, DON'T BE SHY, GIVE THE GILL SERIES A TRY. Either put a post on here or contact me on kiles1uk @ yahoo. co. uk (without the gaps).

As Mike says, the forcast is good for up north, unlike the south, and I am sure there will be cake available at some point during the weekend.

See you all Saturday

That makes two of us requiring volunteers.

My number is in the book or all over the fixture list.

Although I confess that I am not in favour of rotating masts as they seem likely to unecessarily increase the cost of a new boat, I (like Emma) still do not understand why some venues are better suited to them than others. PLEASE WILL SOMEONE EXPLAIN?

In my opinion, rule changes should be considered (a) when current boats have overtaken the rules, e.g. all new boats of "standard" (not exotic) construction are coming out significantly under weight then look at a weight reduction; (b) to simplify unnecessarily complicated rules that add to the cost of construction through either increased time required to build or increased cost of materials  to comply with the rules; or (c) to reflect a change in the generally accepted standards of construction, e.g. introduction of metal masts.

I accept that there are grey areas at some point in time with all of the above, but we should continue to foster the concept of maintaining development through evolution, not revolution.

I look forward to seeing the explanation requested above.
