For those of you who want to get organised and book accommodation early, Burton Week 2019 will be at Pevensey Bay SC between 24-27 August. It's over the bank holiday weekend, so you only need to take one day's holiday from work to do the whole event.  For 2019, we're asking everyone to try and bring a friend to Burton Week: someone who perhaps hasn't sailed a 12 before, or never sailed at Burton Week before, or hasn't been to Burton Week for a few years. If everyone who came this year did the same, we'd have over 50 boats! So while you're looking at campsites, B&Bs or cottages, don't forget to ask your friends to pencil the dates in their diaries too. The committee is happy to help with finding boats to borrow.

More details about the event will be published in the post-Christmas mailing.

The For Sale list is looking very thin at the moment and we know of quite a few people looking for second-hand boats to buy (especially more modern/double bottom designs). If you've got a 12 that you're no longer sailing, please do advertise it on the For Sale list on the website and we'll try and match it up to a possible new owner.

I'm looking for ideas to improve the National 12 website. Does anyone have any good ideas. I'd really like to know

1. Is there any information that you think is missing?

2. Is any of the site confusing?

3. Is any of the site stale/boring/un-interesting to read?

4. Are the things you've seen on other sites that you think should be on the N12 website?

George Finch has already suggested integrating the National 12 pages  on Instragram - so that's on my list

All ideas welcomed, please post here...

We're planning an early session National 12 coaching session at Burghfield SC on Saturday 19th May. There will be a good number of local boats and all levels are welcome. We'll probably do a combination a boat tuning, excersises focused on boat speed and maneouvers plus a bit of practise racing. We'll have the video camera to help with the debriefs so you can hone you skills and techniques.

Kick off (rigged and ready) at 11am, finish at 5pm

Please let me know if you'd like to join in

Happy sailing

Calling all budding 12 fanatic photographers, the Association has launched a Flickr Group. All the photos from the old Photo Gallery on the website have been transferred and you can easily add your own 12 sailing photos to the group at https://www.flickr.com/groups/national12org/

Why not spend a few minutes on the rainy bank holiday Monday to add a few of your own photos to the group

Happy snapping

News just in from Howard Steavenson that storm damage means the Tynemouth SC (Newburn) Blaydon Race has been cancelled.

A combination of "The beast from the East" ' the spring tide flooding and the huge waves from the ESE - which hit Priors Haven from the one direction it lacks breakwater protection,- have caused severe damage to the beach, roadway, and dinghy park at Tynemouth SC. Yesterday TSC hired a JCB to remove the largest rocks from the tarmac but there is a monumental amount of work to be done by members to get the Haven, and the TSC dinghy park, into 'workable' condition prior to the start of our summer sailing season on Sunday 25th March. We have a work party planned for this  Saturday 16/03/18, which we hope will be well attended by members armed with shovels and wheel barrows. However at last night's TSC Committee Meeting we decided to (sadly) cancel the Blaydon Race at Newburn this Sunday in favour of solving our problems at Priors Haven.

With the evening's brightening up the Camm family are now planning Summer sailing holidays. Salcombe week Aug 5th-10th is high up our list (plus the kids list for the excellent beach time). Who else is planning on going?

Peter Sparrow from Time and Tide Boats asked me to announce the following

N1 Gipsy will be for sale via auction at the  Time and Tide Boats Classic Boat Auction to be held at Beale Park in Berkshire on 2nd-3rd June.

Gipsy is the boat that started the class off in 1936 and is an Uffa Fox built boat. The boat is in very good condition and is complete with mast all rigging and sails. The estimated price for this original boat, and a chance to own a piece of history is expected to be between £2000 to £4000.

Interested bidders should register via our website at www.timeandtideboats.com or can contact me on 07522695526. There are also other rare Uffa Fox, Holt and Proctor designs available.

  Hi all,

We've had a few people asking how things are progressing with planning so thought we'd give you all an update, and hopefully convince a few more to come and get involved. For those that don't know three years ago 77 boats went over to Carnac for a four day event in the sun. Everyone who went had an amazing time, barring a minor self-inflicted hospital trip for the organiser, and so we thought we should do it again. I'm sure most of you already know the details but I've added the background info for those who missed out last time and added some more info on this edition below.

The venue is ideal with all the usual you could want from a club, plenty of space, easy launching, a great sailing area and a very professional team used to running major events. Unusually for a club of this size they are also incredibly friendly and welcoming. It's also walking distance to the town, beaches and easy access to the surrounding area for those coming for a holiday. Getting there is surprisingly simple with multiple flight and ferry options and Brittany Ferries are kindly offering a discount for competitors and supporters. The link to claim this is e-mailed to you on entry, a few people have said it's not coming through but it should all be working now, please remember to check your junk e-mail folder and if not, e-mail tom@smelt.info and I'll send you the link. Various people have also been sorting out sharing double stacker trailers using the event facebook page so that is probably the best place to put out an offer / request if needed.

The Sis are currently being refined but the format for the sailing will be similar to last time with handicap races Saturday that don't count to the main series in case anyone can't get over there in time and then fleet racing on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The main changes are the addition of a pursuit race on the Saturday before a back to back handicap race and the option to run sprint races on the Monday. Target length for these will be 15 minutes so if someone makes a blinding start then there's less chance for it all to go wrong and anyone making a bad start is quickly into another race so no need to spend a long race trying to catch up again. Otherwise we'll try and keep the same balance of shore and afloat time as before.

We've changed the socials a bit as it's always fun to mix things up, this time we have approval to attempt a Guinness world record for the biggest human knot! Early practice has been a bit sketchy but Rachael Rhodes has managed to get her class about half way there so I'm sure with a bit of co-ordination and luck on the day we can get there. Otherwise there is also a meal at the club included in the entry, and we are planning on a quiz and possibly some paddleboard racing in the harbour (spectating will probably be an activity in itself if anyone has over indulged on the local grape juice). These will be finalised closer to the day.

As the headline would suggest we have some great sponsors on board who have been really generous providing prizes for the racing. On top of that there is a day's professional coaching to be won for one fleet. We are just finalising the t-shirt design and will be ordering these in March. Anyone who has entered and paid by the end of Feb will get these free of charge. The website shows who has entered so far (76 boats and counting...) and which deposits we have received, any queries just let me know.

The other questions we've had relate to time and costs. The event is happening 27th – 30th May so it's a bank holiday weekend and half term. It means it can be done with only 1 day off work if you want. Cost wise will depend on your circumstances and how many people you are bringing, as open meetings go it is quite expensive, as holidays with your mates go it's an absolute bargain.

More info can be found at www.smelt.info or feel free to e-mail tom@smelt.info if you can't find the answer there. I'll also be around the dinghy show on the Saturday or various events beforehand.

See you in France!

It is sad to report that Arthur Richardson, an enthusiastic National 12 Owner at Beeston and Trent Valley S.C's, in the 1950's and 60's, has passed away at home, at the age of 91. He was Commodore of Trent Valley Sailing Club for many years and was widely known and respected by the sailing fraternity.

More details will be published when known

As many members will be aware, 2016 is the 80th Anniversary of the National Twelve Class and to mark this achievement I suggested to the Chairman that it would be timely to undertake another survey of the oldest boats of the class, in the Vintage Wing. Thus we can show the sailing fraternity how many craft have survived from the early days and are still active. The chairman agreed and therefore I ask Vintage Twelve owners to complete the simple questionnaire (see link below).

Many thanks,

A few people have reported that they have received a spam e-mail sent from [mail=info@national12.org]info@national12.org[/mail] saying "Happy new Year" in the mail and containing a link to a Google Shared Document. This mail has not been sent by the National 12 Association so please don't click on the link or open any documents

It looks like someone is impersonating [mail=info@national12.org]info@national12.org[/mail] as the The National 12 Owners' Association don't use the e-mail address. I've asked out Internet Service Provider to investigate the issue.

If you have receive a suspicious mail please let me know either reply here or e-mail [mail=webmaster@national12.org]webmaster@national12.org[/mail]

Thanks

Dear all
The National12 website was the target of a denial of service attack today and our Internet Service Provider took this site off-line. We're back on line now but there is a chance the  denial of service attack may start again.
It isn't affecting any of the content of the website.
I'm working to sort a solution out with our service provider

Ranelagh Sailing Club need your support on Sunday 7th July...
FFC's Riverside Stand Development

Dear N12 Sailors,

Our opposition to the new stand, which would have a devastating affect on sailing conditions and the future of Ranelagh Sailing Club, has reached a critical stage. FFC has applied to the Port of London Authority for a River Works Licence to build the stand 11 metres out into the river. We and many others have objected on sailing, safety and legal grounds and the PLA's Licensing Committee expect to make a decision in July.

The Chief Harbour Master, David Phillips, who is a member of the Committee and a sailor, plans to visit us on Sunday 7th July to see what we get up to.

We are running the N12 Open at 1 o'clock and we plan to have an informal Club race starting approx. 1.15pm on a special course.

Our objective is to get as much activity on that day as possible to impress David that we are worth preserving!
Please come and, preferably, sail, but otherwise make up the numbers.

We shall lay on lunch for the N12 competitors after the race. Spectators, if you wish to have food, please let me know via email, [mail=cpedwards@ranelagh-sc.co.uk]cpedwards@ranelagh-sc.co.uk[/mail], and we will try to cater for everyone.

Do please try and make it, Ranelagh needs you!

Kind regards
Christopher Edwards
