How is the 2017 events calendar advancing?
Some pointers for venues and dates for the 'GUL' series would be appreciated. The usual pressure and competition for holiday dates is upon us!

Does anybody know if camping at Sunderland YC will be permitted for this event?

Linda is watching episode 2 of the Coroner; 'How to catch a lobster'. Via iPlayer.

There is a young man who has gone missing from somewhere along the West Country Coast. His GF hasn't seen him in over a week. His boat is gone.

What sort of boat? "It's a national 12, a wooden one, named Hispaniola and it has a blue bottom."

A sail number would have been useful, Luv. Knowing the era would help. Should we be on the lookout for clinker, four planks, or cold-moulded ply?, I say. I did a quick search of the database and trumped nothing.

So if anybody knows of a blue-bottomed National 12 named Hispaniola and it's whereabouts then they may be able to help solve the mystery of a missing person in a fictional setting.

Of course the boats disappearance might have nothing to do with the young man's disappearance. Within the fraternity there exist individuals that just cannot resist a new acquisition to add to their personal fleet.

How incriminating would it be if Hispaniola turned up in barn lying next to Dolly Daydream?      [with tongue firmly in cheek, of course]

Could there be an innocent explanation, I wonder. Might he be sailing his way to Brightlingsea? Not that I would recommend it. And even I wouldn't need to set out so soon.

He could have read Frank Dyes account of sailing a Wayfarer to Iceland and Norway and been inspired.

"Don't give up hope, girl, he might turn up in the Bay of Biscay," should have been a line in the script.

Forty years ago (almost) the texts that greatly enhanced my understanding of racing sailing dinghies were Sail Racer (Jack Knights), Start to Win (Eric Twinname), and Racing Dinghy Sails (Jeremy Howard-Wlliams).

Have these books been bettered in recent years, does anybody think?

Looking ahead to the booking of leave for 2016 . . . .
Does the advance of planning inidcate a date and venue for Burton Week in 2016?
UYC seem to favour the first weekend in July for the Birkitt but no date showing online as yet. Can anyone add any insights as to how this event may fall in the calander?

I've just been researching local retail facilities for own own essential suppllies ..

.. and can share them with you, just click the link and it will open in a new window ready for printing with opening hours, addresses, phone nos, and even post
codes for those with sat-navs.
At
about a mile and a half ASDA looks most convenient, just turn left out
of TBYC, keep to main road and head up to A13 and it comes up on the
right.

Tesco Express is about a mile north and west and close by golf course
Waitrose
is just a bit to the north of S-on-S and on the A1159. I'm not at all
partisan, but I highly recommend Waitrose; any ££ you spend their will
contribute to my sponsors (wifes') bonus and therefore helps my
campaign effort. This ancient suit of sails is all I have ! !

Note, I have only confirmed BH hours for ASDA.

I am contemplating re-jigging the inherited wire strop cascading kicker which i think the previous owner jury rigged at some ponit, and left it that way.
With a Proctor 'C', is 16:1 adeqauate or does 24:1 make for easier and more practicable control?
'Think 24:1 can be acheived with a two step strop cascade as 2x and 2x, and mated with a 6:1 tackle block rigged with V12 and tails led to cleats on each side of thwart.
Any thoughts anyone?  Should I dispense with wire altogether?

I will soon be having a block-laminate beech worktop fitted in the kitchen for the sink-run.
I am hopelessly 'green' on epoxy and two-pack finishes. Nonetheless, having read Adrain Baker on the OK class assoc I wondered if a couple of coats of low-viscosity clear epoxy would make a good base upon which to finish with a satin yacht varnish. aside from whether this application actually merits going to those lengths it would be an opportunity to get famailair with product and methods. Intention would be to pre-finish before fitting.
Alternative thoughts would simply be varnish, oil or two-pack..................
Thoughts anyone?

These are a few very selective quotes from something someone posted on 3 Nov 2008.

The classes most attractive features are "heritage, pride and inclusivity" and that "the full implications of recent world events have yet to be seen"

"What's great about the Twelve is that it offers a low cost entry to some great club and circuit racing with the opportunity for future investment and progression. Just possibly we are entering a period where considerations of cost may sway potential new owners our way."

We seem to be doing fairly well, don't you think?

For sure I might not be able to make it to quite so many events this year as I would really like but it would take really terrible times to stop me from sailing at my home club.

"There is nothing better than enthusiastic 12 owners getting the covers off, being seen to be having a fun time, and infecting others with their enthusiasm"  - What better advice for a Sunday morning!

There is no shartage of enthusiasm in this forum.

(I know we are of one mind but just remember people who are potential new 12 sailors visit these pages ;))
(psst!  the grad psots are so boring!)  - Non intended!

Are there any users of this friendly forum who have any experience, knowledge, or connection with publishing ?  (non-fiction)
I have non. But have a feeling I may soon have to learn from the deep end.

Does anyone have any comments regarding sail number removal from modern laminated sails?  Would some cautiously applied heat from a hairdryer help? Can they simply be peeled or must solvents be used? is there a risk of delamination?

In a senior moment I created my ID as 'Crusader 3422' when really I intended to be 'Crusader 3244'. It's a small matter but it doesn't feel right incorporating what may be someone elses sail no.!   I didn't seem able to change the name. Before I create a new ID does anyone know (or have the privaledges) to rename me?
