I'm looking for a clew outhaul system on a carbon boom that has minimal friction. At the moment I've got a strap that goes round the boom fastened with velcro but it doesn't run freely

A neat solution I've seen has a s/s rod inside the boom with a slot in the top of the boom to allow a block to run along the rod and to which the mainsail clew is fastened. Anyone use this system? If so, is it hollow tube or solid rod, what is its diameter and length and how are the ends fixed to the boom?

Less than 7 weeks to Burton Week (and counting!)

Some of us haven't been out on the water yet, some of us haven't finished building/fitting out our boats yet! What is certain is that we're all a bit rusty after a long cold winter.

The first of the N12 Coaching Days, and the only one before Burton Week, takes place on Saturday 24 April, the weekend after next.

Format will be familiar to you

Rigged and ready to sail 10:00 (coffee available from 09:00)
Quick chat, on the water session, video debrief
Break for lunch (I will confirm what catering will be available)
More on the water

Subjects will be what you want to cover but being at the beginning of the season, we'll be taking a good look at boat handling and turning corners

We're hoping for a good turnout from our expanding home fleet (6 entries already for Burton Week) so if you are coming, please let us know so we don't get caught out on rescue cover.

The following day Sunday 25 April is the second of the N12 Youth/Junior Series and anyone sailing in that is welcome to leave their boats overnight. Unfortunately we do not have any camping facilities at the club but there are a couple of camp sites close by in the New Forest.

Any queries, please get in touch and look forward to seeing you

Cheers

Tragically, Simon's son, Rory, died in a mountain bike accident on Saturday
Rory was 19, fit, young and healthy and died too young

I can't find any words that go any where near descibing my feelings

Our thoughts go to my good friend Jammy Dodger, to Lyn his wife, to son Thomas and daughter Rosie

Are there any measurers going to Leigh & Lowton this weekend prepared to demonstrate sail measuring to me so that we can have a measurer on the South coast (based at Spinnaker)?

We will be travelling up on Saturday morning but I would hope there is time before racing on Sunday to run through it - might depend on how long the bar is open on Saturday though!

Give me a call if possible, number's in the book.

Countdown to a full weekend’s N12 sailing at Spinnaker.

Coaching led by Graham on Saturday followed by a BBQ in the evening and our Open meeting the following day which counts for the Thames Area

Full details under Ian’s post “Spinnaker Invitation Weekend”

Unfortunately we don’t have any space for camping at Spinnaker but there are a couple of good campsites close by in the New Forest and plenty of B&B’s around for anyone who wants to make a weekend of it

If you are coming can you please let us know so that
a) We arrange sufficient rescue cover and coach boats and
b) Let our caterers know numbers for the BBQ

Hope to see you there

You will all have noticed (I hope) that there are some fairly major rule changes that are now in force.

Next Wednesday, 8 April, Spinnaker has arranged for rules expert John Doerr to
chat to us all about the racing rules. This is a great chance  to come and hear from the expert what the
rules changes for this year mean to us all. John is the chairman of the ISAF
Racing Rules committee who write the rules and was head of judges at the
Beijing Olympics last year.  An evening not to be missed by anybody. This evening is open to
anybody with an interest in sailing and not just Spinnaker members so pass it on.

It
starts at 6:30 and is open to everyone interested. I know it's a bit of
an early start but if you can get there, I sure it will be worth it.
The galley and the bar will be open for food and refreshments and if you would like to come along perhaps you can let me know so that we can forewarn the Galley on likely numbers.

Cheers

I see that Wilde Thyng is coming to Spinnaker

Has anyone got contact details for the new owners Nick and Ros Rodgers so we can invite them to the coaching day this coming Saturday?

If Nick or Ros is reading this, welcome to the fleet, send me an email and look forward to seeing you soon

:)

Pick your oakham, holystone your decks, tar your sails, polish your brass, dust off those oilskins.

It’s Spinnaker N12 Open.

Saturday 14 June 2008

11:00 first race

4 races, 3 to count

Catering being confirmed

BBQ AFTER SAILING

A chance to put back those calories burnt off in the day, prime beefburgers from the Hamptworth Butchery, the finest in the area. BUT we will need to know if you will want one as they’re not your value burgers from Tescos.   :P

We now have 12 boats in the N12 fleet at Spinnaker and we are hoping for a good turnout to show just how keen we are. We already have confirmation of visiting boats, Graham, Mike and probably John, but we have plenty of water for a lot more.

Picking up from the recent thread on culls, this one will not be (from Spinnaker’s calendar).  ;)

The N12 class is a broad church and all are welcome, vintage, AC, DB, club sailors, champions. N12 open meetings are sociable affairs with the emphasis in having a good time with like minded folk and it definitely not about being a would-be hotshot. If you have any doubts about that, please call me (and if you are one, call me anyway and perhaps you give me some tips!)

So, let me know

That you are coming
How many beefburgers you will require
Any problems you need help with
Advice about the day
Crew issues (not the domestic ones, we all have those!)

If you can encourage others at your club to come, even better

Further details of the club at

http://www.spinnakerclub.co.uk/

We very much look forward to seeing you

Email me, call me, reply here

Cheers  :)

Good news, second hand boats are selling which must mean there are people out there getting into the class.

I was printing a list to put up on the club notice board but the list is looking a bit out of date. There are still 5 Vintage boats for sale, but 5 of the 10 AC boats listed are marked as sold as is 1 of the 4 DB boats. If your boat is sold can you remove it from the list, it means I don't have to go through them and cross them off the list.

Spinnaker has 3 new boats this year and Jeremy Hartley seems keen to rejoin the class, all we have to do is get them all out on teh water at the same time . . . !

2 boats on Ebay

A further opportunity to get out on the water and get some practice in after Bristol Corinthian the previous weekend.

Usual format of on the water session followed by video debrief, all on what you want to practice, it's all up to you.

Follow the link to "Coaching sessions" to see where we are, the following link will give you more info on the club

Start time advertised as 10:30 am, that's the rigged and ready to sail start time, the kettle will be on by 9:30. Unlikely that we will have any catering on site that day so bring your own butties.

Please let me know if you're coming, any queries, let me know.

Look forward to seeing you

;D

Casualty of this week's gales, Fantastic Mr Fox (D8) fell over in the boat park (despite being tied down) and has a bent mast.  It's creased at deck level so I don't think it will straighten satisfactorily.  :'(
Any thoughts on type of carbon mast for a crew at the heavier end of the weight spectrum, Superspar perhaps?
Anyone with one in their garage?

Just to confirm that it's on

Please be there at 9:30 (when the kettle goes on) to be changed and rigged ready to sail by 10:30

No catering tomorrow I'm afraid so bring your own butties and it looks like you'll need the sun cream as well!

See you tomorrow

Didn't make it to Salcombe, sorry guys

Didn't make it to Cowes Week either - but that's a completely different story

Instead we went to Bassenthwaite, in the glorious Lake District, for the latter half of Bass Week and had a wonderful time. Wonderful setting, excellent club facilities, good food and showers with camping on site.

Six N12s at various times through the week. Philip and Helen David scooping some pots in Wendy Windblows (3217), Mike and Alex Storey following close behind in their first season in The Electric Prune (3491) with support from Sue Jones and Ellie Whilton from Nottingham (3263), Dennis King and Matthew/Janice from Attenborough SC (2964), me with Ben and Dawn from Spinnaker (3398 ) and Barry & Peter Lancaster (3275).

A really enjoyable family regatta week at a well organised friendly club with a variety of mini regattas. one off races, pursuits rather than just one long regatta.

It was our first open in Mr Fox with a best result of 4th but Ben won his first sailing prize so he was dead chuffed - first of many I hope!

Definitely recommended and one to consider for next year (2-10 August 2008 )
