Oh, and how major a job is it to repair/replace the centreboard casing?!
Sorry for all the questions!!

General National 12 chat / Poorly 12!

Hi all,
Just after a bit of advice - hopefully you guys will be as hepful as ever!
My Crusader (3262) is in need of a little TLC... I've been having major problems getting the centreboard up and down for the last year or so... Have tried everything (including new gaskets) to no real avail. A boatbuilder near me has had a look and has sanded the board down for me, removing some of the paint but not touching the cloth. However, he said there are two problems:
1. The board has swollen where it's cracked and water has got in
2. The boat was left with a bit of water in the bottom for a few weeks and the wood of the centreboard case has actually swollen and become misshapen...
So what I'm wondering is...
1. How much should I be looking at for a new/second hand centreboard? I'm poor and not majorly into racing, so after nothing flashy! Just something basic which will stop me going sideways will suffice!
2. Alternatively, how easy (and expensive) will it be to build my own board (or get someone to do it for me)?
3. The boatbuilder seemed to think the centreboard casing may dry back into shape (fingers crossed!) If not, how much am I looking at to get someone to repair/replace the board casing? Eeek!!
Thanks!!

Brilliant! Good to know, thanks! Last summer she had a new paint job.... the decks are now cream with varnished gunwhales and strips... She looks beautiful, and will look even more so after I've given the hull a nice coat of paint this winter!

Hi guys,

Just looking for a little more advice...
Last year I painted the deck and varnished the gunwhales etc. The hull has not been painted for a number of years. Whilst I am planning to repaint the entire hull at some point, I don't want to do it now, in season. However, I want to touch up a few scratches, marks etc on the varnish, recently painted decks, and also quite a few marks on the hull.
Any advice?! I.e. can I just 'touch up' the hull or do I need to sand and repaint the whole thing? With the varnish, do I need to sand back the top layer before I re-varnish?
Thanks!!!!

Brilliant, thanks Antony!
The sails are in amazing condition... I'm no expert but I would say they are pretty much 'as new' :)
I am open to offers everyone, so anyone - if you're interested, let me know!

Hi Guys.

I've had my N12 for about 3 years now, and before that hse was owned by Gill Moore - Sail 3262.

When I bought the boat from Gill I also bought a set of very nice racing sails! According to Gill, they had only been used a couple of times. I have only used them twice myself. So they are virtually unused! The sails are in REALLY good ocndition - the jib is still really stiff and feels like new. The main also feels like it's brand new.

I'm no expert on this sort of thing, so no idea on material etc...all I know is they are incredibly light (I picked up my 'everyday' sails afterwards and really noticed the difference!)

Pictures attached show the Main and Jib.

I'm also placing this advert in the For Sale section, but basically looking for £400 ONO for the set. Would be willing to sell separately, but preferably as a set.

Let me know if you're interested! If you have any questions, let me know...

Also one other question! (Sorry!)

I also found last year that the centreboard would constantly (I mean literally every time) get stuck when I went to get it down at the beginning of a sail. I found out that what was happening was that the centreboard rubbers were folding themselves up inside the centreboard case when I pulled the board up at the end of a session.

In the end, I got so frustrated that I took the centreboard rubbers off. This seemed to help a lot, although obviously now I tend to get a fair amount of water slopping up into the boat.

Any ideas on that one?! Would it be a good idea to get some new centreboard rubbers put on? The old ones I took off were pretty old and cracked and so I think that was probably the reason they were getting cosy in the centreboard casing

Thanks again!!

Hey guys,
Hope all are well!
I'm getting back into Twelves again after a break of (quite a few) years! I last sailed my Twelve at Saltash when I was about 14 or 15 as Gill Moore's crew (if anyone remembers her?). She then emigrated and I bought her 12, Number 3262, off her.
Apart from a couple of sails on the Tamar and Isles of Scilly, I haven't sailed her much because I've been off at uni etc.
I'm spending the summer working on Scilly this year and so am determined to get her in the water more again! However, a few questions which I'm sure some of you lovely people will be able to help me out with!
1. What is the optimal crew-helm weight ratio?? I remember when I sailed with Gill she said I was an ideal crew as we were roughly the same weight. Is this correct, and how much does it matter?!
2. Last year whilst sailing on Scilly in a bit of a....err...brisk breeze (I had literally just said to my crew that we would head in as it was getting a little brisk!) we had a particularly nasty capsize where we went to tack around and the tiller extension literally came off in my hand (the universal joint had just completely come out of its socket I later found out!)... The capsize was nasty enough, but on recovery, the boat was absolutely full to the gunwhales with half the Atlantic. The water wasn't particularly keen to leave the boat. Any advice on this situation?!
Thanks guys!!

Hey guys,
I appear to have a bit of a problem over here on the Isles of Scilly....every time I come into the beach, sand and grit gets up inside the centreboard casing, jamming the board next time I go out. The past two times this has happened, the only way to free the board has been to get the boat up on its trolly and take the centreboard right out...bit of a pain! Thought somebody else may have had the same problem before, so would appreciate any wisdom you guys can offer! Obviously, I'm trying my hardest not to let the hull touch the sand before I get the boat on the trolley but sometimes it's inevitable!
Thanks!

Hello all!
I'm now the proud owner of Jammin after her old owner, Gill Moore, moved to New Zealand. I used to race N3262 with Gill, and jumped at the chance to purchase the boat when Gill moved. Unfortunately she's been out of the water for the last 12 months (I'm at uni, so rarely have chance to sail her) but Summer 2009 sees us heading over to the Isles of Scilly for the entire summer, so plenty of sailing will be had! Can't wait!!
