It is with huge regret that I have had to put 'Max Factor' up for sale.:'(

I will get round to putting an advert up on this page soon. If anyone out there would be interested in her or knows of someone who might please feel free to get in touch.

I have loved sailing the boat but due to a shortage of money everywhere I am not going to get the use out of it that it deserves.

The boat has all new sails, covers and lots of new ropes and fitting this year. A chapter would be Idea for sea venues.. Like say waymouth next year!!!! Just something to consider. Let me know if you want and extra information or photos.

Is anyone going to make the trip up north to Largs? As the guys who were there last year will know it is one of the best sailing venues in the UK. This is always a good weekend and it would be goos to get a fleet of 12's there. Am I right in thinking it is part of the youth series? Any young sailors gonna bring the average age down a year or two?! Anyone interested???

First I have to say sorry for not making it to the Solway open, poor show from a scottish boat I know!! After our bad show at Leigh and Lowton we'd like to make an effort for this one. Never sailed there but a one day event is quite apealing. Who is planning on going??

Just a quick check to see if there is any Idea of number for the scottish champs at Annandale?

Would there be anyone there who would be able to measure sails. or is there anywhere I can get them done befor?

I would like to first say that I am delighted that the scottish championships are being hosted by Annandale. I have had some great experienses at the club and they always put 110% into an event.

I couldn't help notice that all the other major events in the country are included in the GIll series. I do understand that in the calander the scottish champs are within a week of Salcolmb (you couldn't go further without crossing water!) is this something that could perhaps  be considered? It strikes me that the meetings considered as the hightest profile are selected as the GILL series. If there were to be a GILL series meeting in Scotland, would this persuade peaople to Travel north of the border?!! It's a long drive but it's worth it!!!

I have noticed that this event is not a favourate for the 12s. Would anyone be interested in making it any more than just us? This would relate really well to the thread about youth sailing in the fleet as this event i a really good social event for youths and gives really good handicap racing. 2nd weekend in feb i think. give it a go!! anyone intereted???????

I am new to national 12 sailing and as a sailmaker I am currently spending a lot of time looking at photos, class rules, mast bends etc.... Before I started looking too closley I couldn't help noticing an ugly looking crease in every National 12 mainsail when sailing upwind in a bit of breaze. I'm not starting to realise why.

Basicly the width measurments permitted in the class rules are too large for the maximun lenght of battens permitted, meaning the battens are not long enough to support the roach of the sail. I know the width measurments were increased in recent years, would it have been in the interests of nice sail shapes to allow longer battens aswell??

This leads onto previous conversations about full length battens....

Would they be better for heavier weight crews?... No better than they would be for a lighter weight crew, but would give you a smoother sail than present class rules allow.
If your a lighter weight crew and you had the option of full lenght battens would you take them?... Yes of course you would. I can't think of a reason why not. Smooth sail, it would still allow you to depower, it would be as versatile as a standard sail both up and down wind. Thought I think the thing that would please the most people is that it would hold a good shape for a lot longer. Laminate cloths loose the mojority of their strength through floging.

Is this something the Class should seriously be considering and possibly something that should be bought up at an AGM?

I know this is going against the grain a bit with everyone talking about making boat simple, but has anyone considered or is using a barberhaul system for sheeting their jib further inboard. I have just bought a N3473 and as a sailmaker I have drawn plans and taken a lot of measurments for designing sails. The sheeting angle on my boat is about 13 degrees. (pretty wide) compared to a fireball or merlin that can be sheeted in at 8 degrees. Any thougths?

I am very happy to say I now own a 12! I am proud to be the new owner of Max Factor.
We made a long journey from Glasgow to High Wycombe and back in the one day!
We are planning on sailing out of Largs and am very keen to get to as many events as I can.
all info and new pics to follow. Many thanks to John Meadowcroft for all his help.

Any thoughts?
Has anyone, to anyones knowlage tryed putting a centre mainsheet system on a national 12? As I imagine there are some down sides to it. Space in the cockpit, extra loads etc. Also I can imagine keeping the boom on the centre line wouldn't be easy. Has anyone got any thoughts on this? I presume it is leagal?!
Many thanks, Greg.

Hi, I am new to this web site as I am trying to buy a boat for next year. I spoke to the guys sailing at Largs this weekend. I'm based near Helensburgh on the Clyde but am used to travelling!! I saw an advert for a boat called 'Max Factor' but sadly the advert seems to have gone, anybody know if it's still for sale? Or is there anyone who would be able to help us out in getting started? any advice would be greatly appreciated.
