The RHYC Winter Series kicks off with three races on Sunday 28th October.  It also happens to be a rather nice high water.  I cannot recall the cost, but it is always very reasonable for non-members (and free for members of course).  The series continues through until Christmas.

More details:  http://www.rhyc.demon.co.uk/dinghyprog.htm

The plan for the first day of the series is to have three races as scheduled, and then try to hold a training based 'de-brief' over lunch.  All being well this will involve some video to watch & analyse, all I need now are the cameraman, camera and TV.

I already have 5 definite for the 28th, so come and join in.  You might also get to see Jo and I launch our new boat for the very first time!  If you are interested in crewing, or know people that might be, then let me know.

N3484 is now sold, despite my taking it for a sail at Thorpe Bay.

If anybody has a DB boat that is not getting the use it deserves, or even better is tempted to buy a new one in time for next year, then let me know and i can provide a short-list of other people that expressed an interest in buying Fatso.

It is very encouraging for the class how fast these boats change hands, and somewhat disappointing for the class that we cannot get more new boats built and more second-hand boats on to the market to satisfy the demand.

The full minutes of the AGM will be in the next mailing, about 2 wks from your doormat.  They do not always carry the after meeting discusssion, so in the interests of those posting on this forum on the subject I thought that i would share a section on weight carrrying.

The Technical Committee were asked by the then Chairman (me) in early 2007 to consider cheap and practical ways to make the heavier crew combinations more competitive.  Bear in mind that this Committee includes designers, sailmakers and regular 12 enthusiasts with an interest in the more technical aspects and is about as good a body as exists in this country to answer the questions without enormously expensive testing.

The answer:
There is no good answer, and specifically it was their view that a bigger rig would not help, as the lighter crews would learn how to handle it in breeze, and the lighter people would simply start to gain their advantage in lower wind speeds (potentially meaning more of the time) as they would plane in less wind.  In addition any additional sail area would make the boat harder to sail,

A longer boat, the best solution but regarded as impractical.
A narrower boat, as above.
More weight in the hull, a possible but controversial idea.  It is the case that the TC opinion was that to remove more weight from the boat would make the issue they were asked to consider worse.

In conclusion there seemed little for the General Committee to take forward, but I want the membership to understand that these issues are discussed pretty regularly.  Bear in mind, in addition, that the 12 already has a pretty wide weight range for a lightweight racing dinghy beacuse you can match your wieght with a hull shape and rig to suit.

I can name plenty of boats that I am either too light or too heavy to sail, some of which i quite fancy!

If you are heading off for the fun, games and sailing next week you need to bring:

1.  Your certificate.
2.  Any trophies that you won last year.
3.  Two costumes for Thursday night, see details under socials.  There will be top prizes, mostly for effort rather than style.

There are obviously lots of other things to bring, including sailing kit.......

See you there,

Very sadly Jo and I are now not going to make it to Ripon, as our youngest is ill.

If anybody wants acomodation I have just cancelled at Newton House in Knaresborough, newtonhousehotel.com or 01423 863529 which looks great on the website and seem very nice.

I am very disappointed, those that are going have a great time,

EARLY-WARNING, there is now only a month left to get the cheaper entry prices for Burton Wk.  It is not too late to find accomodation and the week is shaping up to be a good one.  Needless to say it helps our organisation of the week to know numbers sooner rather than later, so you can help us to  and save money all in one go!!

Details & Entry Form on this site under EVENTS.

If you are still unsure as to whether you will enjoy Burton Wk, or considering taking the boat to one of the family sailing weeks, then get in touch with any questions.  If I don't know the answer I can find somebody that does!

The link below will take you to the information for the Easter weekend at Waldringfield.  Ass usual it will be a lovely weekend sailing on the Deben.  Also worth noting:
1.  Due to requests from other classes there are now only 4 races to count even if 6 are sailed, so you can qualify doing only 2 of the 3 days.
2.  There is camping, but the club do not advertise it!

For those that have not paid much attention to the fixture list please note the next important event:

On Saturday 24th there will be a whole day of coaching by a team led by Graham and Zoe.  To help ensure that there are sufficient coaches to maximise the benefits of the day it would be helpful if Graham knew who was coming along.  Please let him know asap if you plan to attend as it will help keep the student/teacher ratio about right.

In addition, we are hoping to have some boats there on the Saturday for a 'try-a-12' day that will be advertised at the Dinghy Show, so spread the word.  Again it would help to know numbers, and so if you or somebody you know wants to come along please email freetrial@national12.org.

Finally:  There is an open meeting on the Sunday to test what you have learnt!

See you all there,
Antony
