Hi Phil

Carbon doesn't go soft or absorb water really so the 12s built in the last 20-25 years are generally in pretty good shape.

N3500 is a Big Issue which is a reasonably stable design. She might have a modified floor and may not be double bottomed throughout so worth checking whether that concerns you. If you fancy a more tippy design then some Feeling Foolishes have been coming up.

All up minimum weight is 78kg (including mast and centre board). I'd expect the certificate to show she is close to that and ideally there should be a few Kg of correctors for some future proofing.

Key things to look out for a cracks in the hull joints - but this hasn't been a problem in the Big Issues. Carbon - Foam does dint so have a look for those but these are typically cosmetic.

Where abouts to do you plan to sail and what sort of all up weight do you expect to be sailing with?

Regards

Graham

I'm crew and boat-less for the open so if anyone would like a helm, has a spare boat or would like a crew please let me know. I'm happy to jump in the front of a 12 and give some racing coaching tips as we go :)

There is a tuning guide on the website https://www.national12.org/hints/tuning_guide/ which gives you some excellent tips on rig set up. This is accessible to Association Members. Suggest you have a read of that and then post any queries here.
Happy sailing

It is with much excitement that the N12 Class are able to share details of the planned 85th Anniversary Event in 2021. On 11th and 12th September 2021, at Northampton Sailing Club, the National 12 class are holding a celebration weekend event for our 85th birthday and we are calling on all current, past and future N12 sailors, enthusiasts and supporters to enjoy a weekend of National 12s. We are planning for one day of fleet racing and then a 'Grand Pursuit Race' with the oldest N12s starting first. See the 85th Anniversary website for more details.

Please add your name to thread if you are planning to join us

General National 12 chat / Ewen Stamp
21 Mar 2021, 08:51
It is with much sadness that yesterday I learnt of the news that sadly Ewen Stamp has passed away following a short illness. Ewen had a very keen interest in the National 12 and the NTOA, spanning over 6 decades, from joining as an associate member in 1962 and even after selling his last N12 in 2003, continued as a member. More recently he enjoyed sailing his yacht and then his motor cruiser 'Imke', both were kept at RHYC on the River Orwell. Moreover, Ewen was still racing his Solo in club racing last year and won the RHYC's RNLI All In Race, during late October 2020. This was the maiden outing for his newly acquired Keyhaven Scow.

It is impossible for me to give full credit to Ewen's contribution to the National 12 Class and there are many who knew him for longer than I did, however in recent years we enjoyed many a discussion in the bar after racing at RHYC. Ewen would fondly recall National 12 events from 15, 20, 30 and even 40 years ago in great detail and these stories were fascinating. He took an interest in our new National 12, (N3551) and was certainly pleased to see a growing fleet at RHYC last year.

In the 1960s, as crew, Ewen sailed with Robin Steavenson in N2053, N1153, N153 and attended many opening meetings. They were an unbeaten team in 1962 until the first weekend of North West Norfolk Week in August of that year. Robin referred to Ewen as a "gentleman's gentleman". Ewen would tow the National 12 or International 14 to open meetings, allowing Robin to save time by going straight from his surgery to the event!
Ewen later went on to helm with his wife Mary as crew, with a number of race and trophy wins collected over the years, including finishing 2nd in the Burton 50th Anniversary Regatta in Poole, 1986 sailing N1153 and winning the Corrigan Cup at Burton Week. Like many N12 sailors, over the years Ewen enjoyed owning a number of National 12s including:

  • N 2382 – Sutler – Proctor Mark 14
  • N 2477 – Watermark – China Doll
  • N 2650 – Paper Chase – Paper Dart
  • N 3211 – Philatelist - Crusader
  • N 3292 – Mailstrom – Design 8
  • N 3453 – E Mail – Final Chapter
Ewen was of course one of the rare individuals who have held the office of NTOA Secretary and NTOA Chairman, which he carried out with rigour – as one would expect from Ewen. He was the NTOA Secretary from 1969 – 1972 and NTOA Chairman from 1980 – 1982.

Ewen Stamp - August 1939 – January 2021

Our thoughts are with Mary and the family at this sad time.

The NTOA AGM will take place on Tuesday 1st September at 7.30pm over Zoom. Details were circulated to all members with the papers, but if you can't find them please contact the webmaster. We need a minimum of 20 members to attend to make it a valid meeting so please take the time to dial in if you can.

Dear all
We are currently having trouble with the usual email circulation list, so here's an update on Burton Week 2020.

At the last committee meeting, we considered whether we can safely run Burton Week under government guidance as revised from 4 July. Given that a 1 metre plus social distancing rule is in place, which would prevent helms and crews who aren't part of the same household (or bubble) from sailing together, we decided that it would not be fair to run a national championships where only half of the active racing fleet could participate. Added to this, gatherings outdoors are still restricted to six people not from the same household and indoors not more than two households. This would make the onshore elements of Burton Week very difficult to run within the current guidance and it wouldn't be the fun social event that we all enjoy.

However, as the situation is very fluid and government guidance is changing rapidly, the committee has agreed with Shoreham that we will wait until 18 July to make the final decision, just in case there are any significant updates.  This is the latest possible date that we can reasonably take a decision, as a lot of work goes into organising Burton Week from both the class and the club sides. If there are not, the decision will be to cancel Burton Week. I know that this will be hugely disappointing for all of us, but our priority has to be running a safe and fair event.

I'd like to thank Shoreham (and especially Sophie and William) for their support in agreeing to make the decision as late as possible.

The Dinghy Shack National series at Royal Harwich might be cancelled but we can still have some fun and go racing! We filled all 20 places at the last virtual regatta so we'll be using the same format running four short races followed by a quiz with a Zoom video conference to keep people connected. We'll we using Zoom Breakout rooms to host virtual quiz teams so you can team up with other households - teams are welcome to join just for the quiz.

  • 19:00 Briefing
  • 19:15 First start
  • 20:15 Quiz
  • 4 races with 3 to count
  • Racing will be in a combination of J/70, F50, Nacra 17 and Offshore racers (disappointingly they still don't have National 12s but the F50 is almost as hard to control as a 12!)
  • Races are limited to 20 boats
  • Entry fee: Free
Please register your entry and virtual quiz team by replying to webmaster@national12.org.
Come and join the fun.

Virtual Regatta in-shore can be played as an Android and iOS app or through the browser. Races are typically under 10 minutes and held in a variety of venues according to the whim of the race officer.

Dear all
In anticipation of the government reviewing its guidance on 4 July 2020, the Burton Week committee will aim to make a decision on whether it's feasible to go ahead with Burton Week 2020 shortly after that date in consultation with Shoreham SC. Our priority in making the decision will be to ensure any event can be run safely and in accordance with RYA and government guidance. If it is feasible to run an event, it is very likely that changes will need to be made to format and facilities, so it won't be like any championships we've run before and we are likely to need a lot of volunteers to make it happen. Please ignore the planned entry fee increase on 28 June, we will notify a new date for the early entry cut-off fee at the time of making a decision, if it's a positive one.

I hope you are all enjoying being back on the water and staying safe while doing so.

The NTOA committee has no record of a deed of gift attached to the Burton Cup, unless anyone out there can find a copy to prove us wrong!

Extensive research by Michael Brookman (including yearbooks, handbooks, sailing instructions etc) shows that while the race has always been long distance and held on the sea, the actual distance, the distance per round of the course and the shape of the course has varied over time, settling down to its current format of around 12 miles in length and 4 laps of a triangular course some time in the 1950s. The start and finish configuration has also varied, with the start sometimes being laid to leeward of the leeward mark, or the finish being a beat either near the windward mark or a short beat just past the leeward mark.
