Messages - chalky

#46
My copy came out of the school library in 1985... I should really take it back one day.

Lots of snow on the East Coast in Suffolk. Mrs White with her dog "Chalky"....
Our next door neighbour has been out skiing! No chance of  any boat building until the weather improves.

The keel, hog and garboards are now all reconnected, followed by 2 weeks of varnishing and light sanding.
The hull is now complete, apart from some more varnish on the decks. Next project is a new trolley.

Be careful if you are tempted to replace the the whole capping piece as you will need a deep board with lots of wasteage. The black marks on the sycamore gunwales of 3232 always looked much better after drying out in the garage but they didn't have any soft spots....
I have never had a problem with using 1 pack varnish or paint over 2 pack. The local yard use Jotun's Ravilakk as it is quick drying, builds up quickly to a good finish and it is much cheaper than 2 pack!

General National 12 chat / "scooter"
08 Oct 2009, 11:53
Just rescued from 10 years storage in a shed. Back on the water with an assortment of bits and pieces, including a home made rudder and stock..... Where have all the other scooters gone? How much sand will they hold?

Starboard side stripped and sanded. I dont have a 12 foot straight edge but 2 pictures with a 6 foot level show where the rocker is.

The hull is still slightly distorted where the trailer pushed on the planking just aft of the mast. Most of this has come out with the replaced broken ribs. The hull is very deep with lots of rocker when compared to a modern boat. interesting to compare the hull shape to a known design. I am also going to measure the rise of floor, did this rule apply in 1949? I haven't got a certificate and assume she measured to the rules when first built

Now upside down and the old varnish and muck is being burnt off. Nothing too nasty so far....

So who is the lucky buyer then?

These are the same pictures that are on Bobtail's blog. Latest coat of varnish full of dust, buts lots work required to get the finish we all want. Waiting for timber to make trestles so I can turn her over and make a start on the bottom. Looking for a cotton jib as the one she came with is rotton...

Hi Ben,
If you want to be on the water in 2010 you will have no other life..... I am not as organised as Tim and have wasted lots of time by not planning ahead and obtaining materials before I need them. Pip looks pretty sound, and I'm sure you can get her back on the water (whrere abouts?) next year. Tim would!

Martin,

i have always used a gas blow torch on all my boats combined with "harris" scrapers and sharp chisels a must. Very cheap (compared with paint stripper) and quick, I cleaned 2 planks on bobtail in about 30 minutes. Be careful not to set fire to the whole project. Looking forward to some photos so we can see the extent of any problems.

good luck john

General National 12 chat / Windy!

N3400 was the only 12 sailing entered in Aldeburgh regatta this year. On friday the fast handicap started at 14.40 and at 14.42 a gust of 44.6 mph flattened the fleet except for one small white boat....An awsesome display of high wind sailing and boat construction. It couldn't have been much different just down the coast at Mersea.....

Time to turn Bobtail around and steam on port gunwhale. The oak wouldn't quite bend cold.

Only if you work much harder than over the last 18 months! It has taken me 9 months to get the inside and decks of Bobtail (nearly) complete.... Looking forward to more photos and progress reports.
