I've got 3 daughters - 9, 12 and 14 -  who have got their Stage 3, 3 and 4 respectively but want to really learn to race well.  I'm useless and just to old fogey and  their practice venue is fun but not very competitive.  We are in Devon, so a long way from Grafham but perhaps we'll catch up with you at an N12 training session!!  chris, Ruth, Ana and Isabel

Boats / Re: N2791 Splatnuck

A friend of ours bought 'Splatnuck' in the 90's but she has been residing in his barn, unused, since around 1997.

With a family looking for greater thrills, we have her on loan for the time being. The correct sails can't be found so this photo shows her with some alternatives. Her condition is reasonable after a good scrub though the centreboard needed to be re-glued.

Photograph taken at Durleigh Reservoir, near Bridgwater August 2007.

Thanks for the info:

1.  There is a short pennant already attached to the forestay.  Without any sails untensioned, the rig sits with the mast about 2cm behind the ram.  I could get on one shroud tension but the other is extremely tight and bows the mast the wrong way ie concave to the bow.  The spreaders don't appear to have been changed from original.  Does the mast bend aft due to the luff tension, sail weight, kicker and sheet tension?  (bendy masts are new to me!)  Even so, should I get both shroud tension on together?

As far as the jib goes, I'll add some shackles at the jib head to get the wire eye to the tension lever but is this just the sail shrunk again?

2.  The mainsail luff rope does appear to have shrunk.  Will look at the other sails and do a work around as suggested - thanks johnk.

3.  The spare tackle must be a cunningham as this is the one that is missing if i lead the main halyard to the second tension lever (therefore not needing a cleat)

4.  I've got details of the sailnumber / boats from the boat list here.  It is a mystery why I have one with N2.  But it is in nice condition being fairly recent.

Thanks for the help.  any more advice out there?

I've heard of this product over the years but not seen it in use.  I would also be interested in results data and photos.

Thanks guys and girls.

The info is confirming my thoughts. I'm going to stick with a boom up to keep the cover off the decks.

I try to keep all my boats in my shed when not in use, but when there is work to be done I can't get in there with the sander - so there are occasikons when they have to stand out for a day or two.

Just need to go with the recommendations for supplier...

Restoring Holt design N1002 slowly.  Over the years someone has applied various mods, including a home made rudder and tiller.  The tiller attachment to the rudder stock is too flimsy and the rudder is a narrow vertical blade which, I suspect, is not giving me enough control against weather helm.  Are there any clear photos or drawings which I could have a look at to return Amante closer to original?

This also applies to the transom generally as it has also been modified.

Am in the (long) process of renovating N1002.  Although I will be sailing with an ali mast I still have the original wooden one.  Unfortunately it has become unstuck.

Anyone have any experience or know which sticky-stuff to use for the best results?
