But how much should they swing? Roughly speaking? Hadn't thought of having coarse and fine adjustment on shrouds. Sounds similair to dragon genoa sheeting. Is the "fine" adjustment left seperate for each shroud or do they join together so you adjust both sides together? Will all these extra cleats and blocks weigh more than the keel and bilge battens?

Thanks for your advice. Very interesting comments especially regarding keel removal. Another question  I forgot to ask was fixed/limited swing spreaders. At the moment they are fixed. We have a mighty screw so mast bend is easily controlled. Any suggestions?

Help! I am planning this winter's work on our ageing Crusader. Tasks will include

1)new slot gasket- Mylar or sail cloth?
2) replace shroud levers with string. How powerful and any neat ideas as we have bulls eyes through deck not ball bearing fittings...
3)Adjustable jib halyard. Muscle box hasn't worked since we aquired the boat and probably never did.
4) remove bilge battens and as much of the keel as I dare.


Sell boat and write out big fat cheque...

All help and advice appreciated

The Aldeburgh Boat Yard will be clearing out the workshop before it is demoilshed and rebuilt. Is anyone intersted in a Crusader mould, frame templates etc?

 Good news! Measured sail as best I can on my own in windy garden. 1/4 width  in by about 15-20mm. Bad news 1/2 and 3/4 widths could be bigger. How close  to the max widths do sails normally measure? Still need to check all other dims and a collar a measurer at waldringfield next week perhaps. Might even get the boat out if it's not too cold.

My sails are actualy new not second hand and were cheap (relatively)because they are cut to the old rules and no on else wanted them at the end of 2006. I  wrongly assumed that they would comply with the new rules.Our boat is 22 years old so the latest cut of sails didn't seem important. Will get my tape measure out at the weekend...and perhaps the scissors!

A couple of comments to keep thiss one going....

1)Did you know that the "mystery"  boat builder in rural suffolk also builds composite racing cars.?
2) Difficult for P&B to get their moulds back from China if production by an unproven builder is not good enough.
3) Quality of fake Rolex watches would suggest copying and production of masts/booms/foils etc a good idea at low cost?

Built in 1985 to replace my broken Pipedream. First called Bakers Dozen. Sailed (badly !) at Burton week 1985 & 1986 . Sold in 1989 to buy house. The only 12 built by Aldeburgh Boatyard, but the plug was used  by Terry Fellowes to build 3240 and 3312.

Was called "Bakewell Pudding" when I bought her in 1983 - my first 12. Unfortunate road accident (boxing day 1984 on the way to RHYC) resulted in major structural damage. Subsequently rebuilt and renamed "Shattered Dream". Never quite the same...
