The life of N5 Mallard. Design: Barnt Green One Design, designed by: Peter Brett in 1936

Boat survived a fire in April 1975 which destroyed the bamboo mast, sails, rudder etc.

Mallard sailed in the first National 12 Open Meeting at Trent Valley S.C. in 1937. I have a photograph of this but can't seem to scan it down to a size that will meet the requiremnets of the database.

Tom Graty

Tom Graty is the owner of Drake ii formally Mallard. Tom discovered Richard Pierce building wooden craft on Windermere in 1984 and commissioned him to make a copy. We were to use all the spars and bamboo mast and Tom was to varnish and fit after delivery in the dry timber stage. See N15 in the register. A complete coincidence that his father had owned N15. Richard and I have since 1984 remained friends and am happy to see his continued success with boat design and build. The following link may be of interest to your members. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXQdqorLX64&feature=plcp

Recently sold on ebay by Tom Graty. Advert reads "This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a rebuilt National twelve painstakingly brought back to life. Drake II was rebuilt professionally at Ferry Nab Windermere in 1984 by Franklin Eldridge. Is a copy of a 1937 twelve which came to me beyond repair. We used all the original fittings etc. Fourteen years on Windermere in a boat house then sailed Rudyard and Pennington Flash. Kept in dry garage. Last sailed in 2013 now needs a new home as I'm getting a bit old for this game. Lovely condition. Sails a bit tired but still ok to use".

Here are some of the fascinating pictures that accompanied Tom's eBay advert...showing the original (beyond repair) hull of Mallard alongside the new rebuild (named Drake II) that uses all Mallard's original fittings including the spars.
