Fiona and I sailed N2531 in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Burton Cup races, and from that perspective have to say I can't see why the age of the boats is the issue;
- in 2009 at Thorpe Bay in very strong winds we started but decided on the first beat the winds were too strong and cautiously retired ( and would probably have done the same in our Final Chapter)
- fantastic sail in the 2010 Burton at Weymouth, no problems
- another great sail at Brightlingsea in 2011, beat quite a few newer boats on the water
In the Firefly class plenty of 40 and 50 year old boats compete and actually win their champs at the same sort of venues we go to and in strong conditions; the age of the boats is demonstrably not an issue
We are all responsible yachtsmen; Isn't it up to seamanlike judgement by each helm before he decides to go afloat to be sure that he and his boat are up to the conditions?
A good selection of other vintage boats in the Burton has been a real incentive for us to enter, it would be a shame to lose the numbers.

Brightlingsea is a great venue. I used to sail here in Hornets and OKs in the '70s, and remember the sea sailing as really excellent. As a club they've been used to running big championships for decades. Club house not grand, but a friendly crowd.

We also have a local boat spare for any helm & crew team who would like to come along - N2430 'Complication' is in good fettle and is available for the weekend to a visitor. Contact Vince Phillips if interested.

This year's Naburn Paddle is over the weekend of 7 -8 June. The first race is on Saturday afternoon at 4.00 and has its own trophy, the Jubilee Cup, as well as counting towards  the overall Paddle result. This is followed on Saturday evening by the big Naburn Paddle barbecue - as always plent of fine Yorkshire ale will be available! Sunday is 3 races, the first one being at 11.15. The event is 3 out of 4 races to count. Do the weekend, or just Saturday or just Sunday, boats of all ages most welcome... and it's forecast to be warm and sunny!
If you need more details please email me on v.phillips1@btinternet.com

 N2430 'Complication' was the second and last boat built to the 'Complex' design. She was built by Wyche and Coppock and home finished by  Denis Mossman from Waldringfield, who sailed her to 5th in the 1968 Burton Cup and  5th overall in  Burton Week the same year.
I still own 'Complication' and she's available to visitors to Yorkshire Ouse - Graham Camm won the YOSC Vintage Trophy in her in 2005!
An unusual feature of the design is the 3 inch deep skeg under the bow, running from the stem to under the mast, which was intended to help the hull grip to windward, but needs care to tack smoothly.
Despite the 1967 and 1968 success of this design, and the even more succesful 'Mr Jones' design  of the same period, no others were built as the design shift led by Phil Morrison's  'China Doll' arrived at the same time and that became the dominant design of the period following.
See N2405 for notes on the original design. Also page 65 of the 2001 Newsletter has some more notes and pics of the design.
