General National 12 chat / Boom
06 Mar 2008, 10:36
Hi,
Does anyone have an old boom that I could use to re-equip my cherub. nothing sophisticated required.
call me on 07977006585 if you have anything. I'm located in southampton so I'd prefer something local.
Cheers

still resident at weston sailing roughly once a month. Had some very good rfesults over the years in handicap racing. seems like a good compromise design for estuary sailing.

thats about the long and short of it. No hollows.

I painted my N12 with it dangling the right way up off the rafters of my garage. This has the advantage of preventing dust settling on the wet paint. Runs can be avoided by dry brushing across the sweep of the brush-on in order that there is only a very small thickness of paint/varnish applied and there are no concentrations. Unfortunately that technique requires several coats but it is the only way to avoid runs as far as I am aware.

Or perhaps you should consider a daggerboard rudder. They are quite easy to fix halfway up with a an elastic loop around the trailing edge of the rudder (above the stock). This system makes steering a lot easier when the board is half up as it doesn't sweep the water like a lifting rudder does.

I'm thinking of turning up with novice crew just for some time on the water and tacking practice.

it certainly helps if your wife loves to sail as mine does - but I can honestly say that learning to sail togethor was harder than learning to race or learning to sail in the first place. We've both learned to leave perceived slights and irritable snaps on the water - and I have learned not to assign blame when things go wrong ... I hope my wife will pick up on that too soon :-). These skills certainly come in useful during the race and elsewhere in life. good luck.

strange ... I hear it from marineware - but I was after <3kg of Ampreg 22. maybe the 106 is still availabe in small quantities.
Should be seeing you on saturday. bring some photos if you have them ( of the boat - not the 106!)

General National 12 chat / epoxy resin

oh no - marineware has discontinued their small (< 3 ltr) epoxy resin products. Does anyone (dare?) know where to buy epoxy at reasonable prices (i.e not through a chandlery)

a rather strange beast - prone to nosediving and soaking up water. Not really worth salvaging when the Weston Sailing Club committee put a big hole in the hull transporting it on a broken trailer. An irresponsible action but for the greater good of the N12 image!
