Yeadon Open Meeting
Twenty two National Twelves took to the water at Yeadon Sailing Club on
Sunday the 8th October. This was the second day of the combined ANEYC
meeting held in conjunction with Ripon Sailing Club and the continuation
of the Northern area celebrations for the seventieth anniversary of the
class. Fortunately for so many boats on a small water the conditions
were benign compared to the previous day at Ripon.
Race one started on a well-contested start line and immediately
Graham and Zoe Camm had to take penalty turns, however this made little
difference to the result as they sailed through the fleet and into an
impressive lead. Second were Philip and Helen David with John and Alison
Cheetham third and Mark and Emma Simpson fourth.
After the usual excellent Yeadon lunch the second race was held in
bright sunshine, after one general recall the fleet got away with Philip
and Helen pressing Graham and Zoe for the first two laps until Graham
and Zoe sailed clear. The battle for third was resolved only yards from
the finish when John and Alison came out on top of a close tacking
battle with Mark and Emma.

For race three the wind moved towards the east and became light and
shifty. Graham and Zoe having won the meeting opted to sail Howard
Chadwicks beautifully restored N2. Philip and Helen led initially
followed by Bernard Clark and Philip Benn in a Cheshire Cat and John and
Alison. However a tricky mark rounding allowed Bernard through into
first followed by Brian Herring and Ros Stevenson in the vintage N1673.
John and Alison managed to overall Philip and Helen to finish third,
however Bernards win gave him third place overall. Graham and Zoe
remarkably sailed N2 into seventh place, proving that, to quote Howard
Chadwick, the way to speed up an old boat is to fit a twin Camm engine.
