Venue & entry

The 2021 National Twelve Championships will be held at Shoreham Sailing Club in West Sussex which is a new championship venue for the Class (we were due to visit in 2020 but the Covid pandemic had other ideas).   The first races of the four day event will begin on Friday the 27th August.  Shoreham SC was part of the National series in 2019 and the Club are very much looking forward to welcoming the Twelves again.  Some familiar names from the National Twelve fleet sail at the Club so know what the class likes and will make us feel at home.

As part of the new town flood defences the Shoreham Sailing Club has now gained a new wide concrete slipway and you can launch straight into the sheltered harbour with a short sail out through the breakwater to the racing area. The boat park will be on the grass close to the top of the slipway.

For non-sailors there are plenty of places of interest in the area to visit, Chichester, Worthing, Battle, Hastings, and Arundel are all within easy reach by car and some probably by bus or train.

Please get your entry in as soon as possible and you can take advantage of the early entry discount.  Follow the links below to enter and check out the discounts, also this year’s discount cut-off dates.

Complete your entry online, by post, or scan and email the entry form to the NTOA Hon. Secretary, see contact details on the Entry Form.  Payment is by bank transfer or cheque, sent with the entry or within 3 days of submitting the entry.

This event may be subject to any Covid-19 rules in place at the time, please refer to the Notice of Race and any other National Twelve Association communications.

Our plan is to offer you the chance to check weigh your boat on Thursday pm and Friday am, you don’t have to do this, although you might like to know the current weight. When you arrive just add your name to the measurers list and they will give you a shout when it is your turn. Having the weight recorded will help if you should get picked for measurement during the event, remember you don’t have to be a winner to get picked, you might be chosen at random!

If however you have sails to be measured please contact the measurers before the event as they will be busy check weighing and trying to get round to rigging their own boats! See the Contacts section.

There will be a briefing at 12.00 hrs on Friday followed by the first race at 14.00 hrs. See the timetable and tides times below.

Sponsors

Burton Week 2021 is sponsored by Sponsor Allen Brothers of Essex are major suppliers of sailing fittings are giving us generous sponsorship for Burton Week this year, so there will be extra prizes and vouchers will be awarded.  There will be boom stickers for your boat available at registration.

This event is also part of the N12 Dinghy Shack Dinghy Shack National Series and there will be separate prizes for this series.  Bow stickers will be available at registration

Buddies

Everyone will be part of a buddy team and each day’s winning team will win a prize.  The aim is for each team to have a mix of experience and skills which they can share, hopefully those new to Burton Week or the Twelve Class will find this useful.

Trophies

There are lots of trophies to be won, but for some of the special ones you need to tell us you do want to enter.  We will acknowledge your entry and confirm the trophies you qualify for. A list of subsidiary trophy entrants will be on display soon after registration, but let the Race Office know ASAP if your entry is not correct.  Once results begin to appear it is a bit more hassle to change things!  If you have trophies to return please take them to the Race Office on arrival, if they are engraved and cleaned we would be really delighted!

Tallies

As usual we will be using our helm and crew wristband tally system for safety and as your race declaration.  Most of you have used this before and know that forgetting to tally means losing your position in races or paying £10 to the RNLI!  You can see the Lifeboat station you will be helping just across the harbour!

Socials

allen logo are sponsoring Burton Week and the daily prizes will be presented each evening.

As well as a good four days sailing we want to make your time off the water enjoyable as well and the plan is for the Club to be the centre of the activities.

If you arrive on Thursday the Clubhouse will be open. Drinks should be available, but possibly not food.  There are some eating places a short drive away from the Club, or a short drive with a walk over the footbridge into the town will give you more choices.  Shoreham Sailing Club members will be happy to provide details on the day.

Friday will be the first night all the fleet can get together for a “Welcome” evening. Two races should already have been sailed so there will be plenty to talk about and some post-race discussion to be had.  A ‘Buddy’ scheme is run during the event, the buddy teams list will be available during the day and this evening is when everyone will be able to meet and chat with their buddy partners.

On Saturday the AGM will be held at 17.30pm at the Club, please do attend as this is the opportunity for members to air their views and vote on any proposals.  This will be followed by Beach Games.

On Sunday we plan to hold the annual Burton Week dinner at the Sussex Yacht Club in Shoreham.  The three course dinner will be at 7.30 pm for 8.00 pm.  The Yacht Club is just at the end of the footbridge in Shoreham town and will be in their brand new clubhouse.  Dress code is smart casual please, this is not a black tie event.  After the meal the Burton Cup and other related trophies will be presented, together with the Decanter Trophy and the Burton Brick.

This is usually well attended and we really need you to book the dinner tickets you need with your entry.  We have to let the venue know ticket numbers in advance and may not have much manoeuvrability to add late comers.  Please also let us have a note of any dietary information we would need to pass to the caterers.

Monday the final day of racing – When the last two races are completed we will try to get the results sorted as quickly as possible so that the final prizegiving can go ahead without delay and you can be on your way home at a reasonable time.  It might seem to be taking an age, but please bear with us as we want to get the results right, it’s not always as easy as it might appear.

Getting there & accommodation

The Club is located on a peninsular on the southern side of the River Adur with Shoreham town across the river to the north.  There is a road bridge into the town, but you can avoid the busy traffic by using the footbridge across the river.  From the sailing club drive along Harbour Way to Riverside Road, use the small car park by the Waterside Pub and shops, and walk over the footbridge, past the Sussex Yacht Club and straight into town.

For the full address of the Club see the Contacts below.

On arrival boats will need to be unhitched on the road outside the Club and walked into the dinghy park. Car parking for the event is available free on the Public Car Park alongside the Club. Only pre-booked Campervans will be allowed in the Club compound.

Camping and Motor home space will be available within the Shoreham SC site and is offered on a first come/first served basis, at a cost of £10 per tent/van for the event.  This must be booked in advance by email only to: visitors@shorehamsailing.org and you will need to state the size of tent or van you need space for.

The nearest professionally run camp site is Barn caravan park, a ten minute drive away and there are more rural sites further afield.  Limited Bed and Breakfast options are available in Shoreham town, but there are more options for those willing to travel a little further in Steyning, Worthing, Hove and Brighton.  There are a range of self-catering options in the area from boats and studio apartments to beachside houses that sleep large numbers.  Most are listed on the internet including Airbnb.  It is best to book early as bank holidays on the south coast are popular.

Registration

The Race Office will be open at the Club from 1pm on Thursday afternoon until a reasonable time that evening!  It will be open again at 09.00 hrs on Friday morning.  Please book in early so you are not in a queue as launching time approaches, you need to check in before you can go racing on Friday.

You need to hand in the Measurement Certificate, particularly relevant if you have borrowed the boat, also the buoyancy must be valid, i.e. dated 30th August 2020 or later.  We keep the certificate during the event, but remember to collect it before you leave on Monday.

The Sailing Instructions, trolley tally, plus Allen boom stickers and Dinghy Shack bow stickers for your boat will be available to collect.

If someone under 18 is part of the crew then we need a signed Parental Consent form which you may need to organise before the event.  If a voluntary Medical Declaration is thought necessary then please consider this as well.

There will be an Official Notice Board at the Club and all important notices will be posted there, so please keep checking it.  The results will also be posted there as soon as possible after each race.

There will be a briefing at the Clubhouse at 12.00 on Friday. Shoreham is a working port and you will get some essential information about the harbour restrictions and rules as well as more general information from the local race team, so please make an effort to attend.
