The life of N2394 Red Queen. Design: Red Queen, designed by: Michael Jackson in 1967 |

After a season crewing at Ranelagh YC, I purchased N2394 Red Queen in mid-1971 if memory serves, from John Humphries (Humphreys?) at Pevensey Bay YC. I repaired minor damage to her, repainted/revarnished and refitted her with new controls and self-bailers ready for sailing (as a novice helm with a novice crew), joining Thames Estuary YC from the 1972 season until selling her in 1974. With my crew, the late John Ling, we had modest success within TEYC series despite an all up crew weight of some 25 stones, but normally only when it really blew. Then her more powerful beam compared with Mike Jackson's forerunner design, March Hare, combined with our weight (plus self bailers, transom flaps and some very substantial buoyancy bags!) allowed us to outdo most at our club level. We were always beaten 'a distance' by the likes of David East at the open meetings but I should really have invested in a new suit of sails. Intending to move to a bigger faster class, I sold her for £195 to a couple when she was at Broxbourne YC following a Winter Series during which we had discovered the advisibility of wet suits. |
