The life of N1819 Sardana. Design: Mark 8, designed by: Ian Proctor in 1958

The Moore family based at Earlswood Sailing Club in the 1960s bought this boat in 1966 when they sold their Proctor Mark 6 Sally (N1380). As well as the club racing (described under N1380) we continued to attend Salcombe Week, and a few Burtons (my brother Kiff helmed at Llandudno in 1970). There were many family changes then including me going to Southampton University in 1969, my brother going to St Lukes College in 1970 and my parenst buying a pub ,called the Drum and Monkey near Upton on Severn in 1971. Sardana was therefore reluctantly sold.

Dear Webmaster,

I happened to take a look today at the N 12 owners web page, I think for the first time as I don't sail any more.

However, I looked at your log of old boats and came across some entries for '1819 Sardana' entered by the Moore family. In 1966 when they bought the boat it was down in Devon and I had just gone to Bahrain - so my Dad sold it for me.

I had gone to work in Portsmouth in 1959 and finished-off the hull that winter [in an amateurish manner, no doubt] at a boat builiding night class held in an old wartime disinfestation centre in Havant. I sailed the boat at Stokes Bay S C.

I write as I recently came across the bill from Chippendale boats for the hull/bulkheads at a cost of £77.10s.0d. I also found a couple of contemporary letters from Ian Proctor, one from Robin Stevenson and another from Robin Lucas [the 2 brothers from Bromsgrove were active and successful in 12's in the late1950's and 1960's I recall].

Anyhow, I attach a copy of one letter from Ian Proctor to me dated 11th August 1959 and the 19th October 1959 bill from Chippendale in case they are of any interest to the historians of the Class.

Yours sincerely,

Roger Lavis."
