I'm afraid this is the last report on Shambles.  Passing her final resting place this week I see she has finally gone to that great dinghy park in the sky.

My usual yearly report!  Shambles was still hanging on when we passed her earlier in 2012.  Not sure how she will have fared over the last winter.  Watch this space for the 2013 report!

Great to hear "Silent Running" is undergoing repair/refurbishment.  As a previous owner I was very distressed to hear of her misfortune.  She is/was a beautiful boat and just one of 2 N12's out of Jacko's workshop.  I hope you can get the decks back - the delamination on foredeck may be a problem.  My brother (a graphic designer) did the name for the transom.  Will await your progress with interest.

Dave Dobrijevic has made some very nice sails for the Merlin fleet including sails for classic/vintage rigs.

This boat was at Hampton SC in the late 50's.  If I remember the only 12 there at the time.

Poor "Shambles" is still there - or what remains of her. Many of the bottom planks are now stove in and detached from transom.

Shambles (or what remains of her) is still on the forshore adjacent to FFSC.  She can only be described as a total write off and well beyond restoration - very sad.

I can confirm that Cinzano still has a red port side and a blue starboard side.  However, she no longer has the rather unusual low aspect rig that she had in her prime in the 60s and 70s.  She came 2nd in 1960 and 5th in 1961 in the Burton in the hands of John Chaplin (I recently spoke with John who was pleased to hear Cinzano was in good shape).  In the late 60s and early 70s she was sailing at Ranelagh SC and then opwned by R. Evans.  She was bought, in a very sorry state, from R. Evans in 1991, by a guy living near Oxford, who commenced restoration.  In 2002 I acquired Cinzano and completed restoration (including a new conventional rig ex. Kevin Iles).  She is now in excellent condition and is listed on the National Small Boats Register.

Sorry rather late in getting in on this one.  A couple of years ago I used West epoxy to glue up an old Holt Merlin mast (MR 235) which had delaminated over much of its length and it is still OK - although not tested in wind strengths above a 5!

Thanks for all your input everybody!

General National 12 chat / Main halyard
27 Feb 2005, 04:02
At present on my Crusader I have wire main halyard with loop & rope tail to go onto rack at base of mast.  The wire strands tends to break where it goes over rack.  Am considering changing to total rope halyard to cleat on mast.  Any comments please - experience - suggestions as to most suitable rope would be appreciated.
