Just having a nosey around the Burghfield SC website (due to the fact I am yearning to go to this event, but cannot possibly attend due to the 500+ mile round trip and my imminent house move)

I was interested to see that the N12 PY is suggested to drop by 30 points to 1063 and the RS200 is suggested to increase to 1070.

When do the club act on these suggestions? is this just a 'for interest' type of analysis? will these be put into a national database and form recommendations to the RYA?

Reducing national PY number might be a consequesnce of smaller fleet size... the hypothesis might be - If only the expert sailors stick to the class, the average speed will increase and the PY come down, making the class less attractive to the novice. Maybe we need more sailors like me to get out and compete in boats like mine (and putting some respectable lap times in, i.e. coming last!)

Did I imagine a fixture list in outlook format downloadable from this website?

I can't find it again

I like the survey - hope you get some good responses. I have sent the link to scaling dam sailing club membership secretary and asked him to send it to the membership.

General National 12 chat / jib size
11 Nov 2006, 06:26
I am being tempted by the 15% off sails at the moment.

Having read the article about Gavin's boat in ratchet (that landed on my doormat this morning), I am wondering what size jib to go for. I currently have a standard 2.2m2 one.

I would love an explanation of Gavin's thinking for each of his experimental design features. Lets strt with the 2.8m Jib - why is that likely to be of benefit?

Abstract AIM: The aim of this work was to establish the characteristic values of the particular electromyographic (EMG) indicators in the simulation of hiking in the laser-standard class in dinghy sailing. METHODS: Seven top-level competitors participated in the study (age: 21.1+/-2.5 years; height: 184.1+/-5.7 cm; weight: 78.4+/-3.7 kp). The 4 muscle groups analyzed were those which, according to expertise are exposed to the most strain during training and competition in all classes of dinghy sailing, as well as in the Olympic laser standard class (extensors of the lower leg, abdominal, lumbar and tibial muscles). A portable surface EMG apparatus was used for the recording of EMG signals. Digitized EMG data were full-wave rectified and smoothed. Their mean values during characteristic hiking positions (sitting - S, upright hiking - UH, leaning backwards hiking - LBH) were compared by means of repeated ANOVA measures. RESULTS: ANOVA showed significant differences for the absolute EMG signal between analyzed positions for quadriceps muscles (UH vs S, p < or = 0.001; LBH vs UH, p < or = 0.01), abdominal m (UH vs S, p < or = 0.001; LBH vs UH, p < or = 0.001), tibial m (UH vs S, p < or = 0.01; LBH vs UH, p < or = 0.05) and lumbar m (LBH vs UH, p < or = 0.01). According to results, the muscles most loaded are the quadriceps muscle of the thigh, followed by the abdominal muscles. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study allow for a better biomechanical understanding of the character of the load distribution in body musculature in positions characteristic of the laser-standard class sailing, and these insights might be applicable to other classes of dinghy sailing.

I'm looking for recommedations for interior paint for my spaceframe baggy N3253 (similar to twice shy and wendy wind blows)

I have decided to paint the GRP and the wood bouancy tanks, centreboard coping and thwarts all the same. (the low clutter approach - I might be able to see the right control line then;-)

I am leaving the decks coated with sikkens ceetol. I need a robust paint that will go ontop of GRP and wood (after a good sand for keying).

Advice please...

Hi,

Inlands - I had arrived late at the sart line due to a jib problem and found myself in the middle of the main pack at the start (a situation I generally try to avoid at present). If you are the owner of the Blue boat that my boom came into contact with and probably scratched, please contact me off list and I will attempt to remedy the damage.

Hi,

I am steping my mast further forward for sailing single handed with just the main, so I can get in more practice without being dependent on crew availability and patience.

I can get it 4 inches further forward on an aditional mast step without modifying the forard bouancy tank (very fleixible, these space frame designs).

This got me thinking about the possibility of a larger main sail and a vestigial jib. has anyone done this before?

Is it true that you can split the 10.4 sq m sail area between the jib and main however you want? I was thinking of trying a contender rig (11m sq), we could have a burgee for a jib!

Just check out the new google video search - it's great!

I just searched for "sailing dinghy" some great video from the I14's in canada. A few guys document their trip to san diego.

Also worth a look is the "pepsi and mentos" video. fantastic creativity!

Is anone planning on documenting their trip to BW on video?

General National 12 chat / lowers
18 Jun 2006, 09:26
Hi,

How strong do lowers have to be and how much tension? I have steel lower shrouds on an 8:1 normal rope pully system - I notice some boats have dynema lowers.

One of the brass bal bearing blocks at the mast step has been pulled apart by the tension. I have fixed it, but feel this is probably too much force.

The mast is secured quite low down by the spaceframe (3-5 inches bellow normal deck level))

General National 12 chat / Tynemouth

Hi all,

Where will the Tynemouth course be set? in the harbour?

I have inlaws who are in South Shields - and could pop down and watch from there if it is in the harbour...

I'm thinking of braving the sea, it will be our first salt water outing in any sailboat/dinghy - ever!

General National 12 chat / weight
01 Jun 2006, 06:50
Hi,

How does one weigh a national 12?

There is a spring balance at our club (but I wonder when it was last checked against some accurate measuring device)

I would like to measure the weight of my hull BEFORE i make any changes to see what needs doing to get it down to weight.

I have looked for public weighbridges - but not found a local one yet.

regards.

been on the lark class discussion board looking for a rudder stock.

found this instead

Simons boat looked well sorted - but goodness control lines just keep getting thinner. Bit dark in that hall.

Minus: Too many hairy arsed skiff type clones, the plastic GP14 - sad, Merlins - don't seem to look as gorgeous as they used to, topper stuff.

Plus: The N12s - top video, that wooden Phantom, the amazing IC. Cheap Lark clothing (we got loads)"

I need sails - preferably a couple of years old - to replace my 1984 and 1987 sets. I'm after a main and possibly a jib (although I have a chance of a new jib cos I have my N12 70th regatta top!)

proctor C section mast. Current Jib area 2.22m2

I'm also looking for a rondar cast rudder stock.

Money is tight as I have just bought 2 rudders. I will be at the regatta.

Hi all,

my running rigging is looking very sad and I have had some breakages. i need to replace all with new stuff

1) what "gauge" should i choose
2) what type of "rope"

I have:

lowers
shrouds
kicker
cunningham
mast ram
mast prebend
outhaul
forstay
centreboard

all of these are lead back to thwart/cb casing.I have dangly pole controls as well

We are just learners and really only adjust on the shore at the moment (outhaul, kicker and forstay)

is there any logical grouping of these controls into colour groups?

also - i need to replace both halyards (def the rope, maybe the metal as well) can one use dacron halyards instrad of steel?

I want to do this before the 20th May

any advice would be most apreciated

cheers

I'm just raising the PY numbers with my club sailing committee. Is it true to say that the numbers published in the handbook (p10) have all been official RYA PY numbers for the class?

sail numbers 0001-1599,     years 1936-1958,     PY1170
sail numbers 1600-2511,     years 1958-1970,     PY1145
sail numbers 2512-3140, years 1970-1980,     PY1130
sail numbers 3141-3271, years 1981-1987,     PY1115
sail numbers 3272-3410, years 1988-1994,     PY1104
sail numbers 3411+,       years 1995+,             PY1093

I think it makes a more compelling case if they were the actual RYA numbers at the time of manufacture.

I do see their difficulty however - when significant modification could have taken place in the intervening years. I personally would not look fo a different number for my boat if I had uprated with carbon spars and foils...  There is also a problem if you have volunteer race officers, having effectively several differnet "classess" of N12 in their computer.

Has anyone had these discussions, what was the outcome?

Regards

Philip
