John Sears will be bringing Punkawallah with Catherine crewing. Lunches please.  :)

Go on then Angus, I'll offer as I seem to be missing a helm for this part of the season and really could do with keeping my skills in N12 rather than the complicated alternative of an Rs400!!!!

I'm short of a helm and boat, and I will only come if there is hail, because Burwain wouldn't be the same otherwise,  so apart from all those issues,  I wish I could be there Patrick

Hi all,
sorry for not posting sooner, "trouble at mill" (pls put on a northern accent for authenticity)
Open meeting on Sunday, first race at. 11.00, two back-to-back before lunch, third after lunch.  Aim for prize giving at 16.00

Pls do let me know if you are going to be there.

This is a Vintage and 4plank event and also a MAAT event, so many points to be gathered for two series.

Don't forget we have a much improved access road now, we also have central heating but we shouldn't need that.  Lunch will be available so some idea of numbers would help with catering.

really look forward to seeing many friends there.
regards,
Christine

Just a reminder for this Saturday.
Training starts at 11.00 and will be finished by 16.00
please bring your own lunch as the club facilities are busy that day, although small snacks and drinks are available all day
Training is being led by John Sears.
please can you let me know if you are attending or need a crew or directions
the club access road has been upgraded, but not in total, the bit round the farmhouse is still lumpy.I look forward to seeing you all there....   And for the open meeting the next day.

regards,
C

I could have an offer of a crew for Saturday, but call me 07914786391
also forgot to say the road access has been upgraded e - sailors do not need to allow an extra half hour to drive their boats down the road now

NoR will be posted on website soon, but this is a gentle reminder of the event.
Anticipated entrants would be great so I can have some idea of numbers,

hope to see many of you there, sorry I have not been out anywhere yet but please don't take it as lack of interest, just too much else on.
kind regards

Does anyone have a significant birthday or anniversary this year that needs us to mark it in the traditional N12 style?

Last year we wet David's head because he got his bus pass  and such a great evening that was.  This year,  we could try for Paul's bus pass but that's 6 months old by now...... so he may think it is a bit passe...

and I really think I have done enough to mark being 50.........  but I enjoyed the whole thing so much I'm on a roll.....

WOL COTTAGE in Burnham Markup (Trent Valley Staging Out-post, campers, hi-de-hi, et al,   and etc) looks a busy location this year, but due to some consideration of the owner's feelings and property it is a tad tricky to host a large gathering there - so how do we all feel about a beach-side event if we can find a way around local bye-laws - Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday evening look like good options - but I am happy to organise with the majority decision for the day/location/style of event.

So names on a postcard please - or by notice here - of your support/ideas/suggestions etc etc

This is really a bit of a first thought flier so anyone with contributions/ideas etc will be greatfully welcome to join the discussion

Looks like it was a great weekend, so sorry to have missed but I bow to my helm's judicious caution regarding the wind predictions before we set out.  I really didn't fancy 30 knot gusts for 2 days!!!! and am now looking forward to some reflective sailing in Welland this weekend - MAAT sailors please note and do join us - great hospitality and such a protected bit of water.  Cx

oh, good oh - breezy! can't remember when I last tried to sail in a bit too much wind!!!!  see you all Sunday,  really looking forward to doing a bit of sailing at the end of our road trip this time  Cx

I am extremely pleased to see such a vast amount of discussion on this subject.  As you may guess, I was party to the early discussions at Hayling Island and especially the dinner time conversation during the Burton Dinner, about how we could recouperate from such a disappointing event for the Vintage sector. Did you know we had decided it was time for the WORLD SERIES INDOOR N12 Vintage EVENT?    No?  You should sit with me next time.!

Anyway, to get back to somewhat more serious ideas about Vintage N12, which I am passionate about.  I have given a day or so to marshall my thoughts before replying and adding to the conversation.  I am really pleased to see Kevan's facts presented so clearly - it has helped me gain assurance that I wasn't seeing things from a skewed perspective.

So my points are:

It has been harder sailing in the Vintage section in the last couple of years when so many events have been so windy - for example: Northampton N12 Regatta 2011, Aldeburgh 2011, Burton Week last 4 years.  It is demoralising to turn up to such events and not sail, often after a long journey too - although don't get me wrong the social aspect is always second to none, but I want to sail too!!!

we do not see it as a split in the class, the Witchcraft Bailer series already exists for Vintage boats, there are prizes for the Vintage section in many events

a dedicated Vintage event will celebrate the uniqueness of our class by promoting the competitive sailing of some very old craft by enthusiasts, old hands and bright young upstarts - although don't forget, although your boat may be designated 'Vintage' you may still be trying to sail an apple against a pear - 'Vintage' does encompass (as you all know) some significant developments in design and performance which due to time have been surpassed  [I'm working on all the specific facts here but you'll have to bear with me whilst I get it all correct - but trust me, I'm a midwife!!!!] and so despite the design advantages they all sail under the same "flag"

if the Burton is only viable (as I have heard) because the Vintage section turn up - what does that say about the Burton event?  Burton Week must be a viable event without taking the Vintage section into account.  If I were to get very cynical, I could suggest that if Hayling Island wasn't viable without the Vintage section, we have just subsidised your sailing for doing nothing ourselves - but then I did say I was only saying that by being very cynical.
yes, there have been a number of modifications to Vintage N12 such as carbon fibre booms, carbon fibres foils, glass fibres foils or even (heavens preserve us!) foiled rudders, and if one wanted to be really extreme - the materials used for sails, sheets, pulleys, shrouds and shackles are certainly not vintage!;  but this is a development class, so anything goes as long as it is within the rules
we will still attend N12 events in Vintage boats - see us at Harwich this coming weekend

so where does that get me:
being wholeheartedly in support of a Vintage Championship, open to all and anyone who has or who can borrow a Vintage N12
in favour of a significant event in the 2013 calendar, which I am more than happy to organise
but not totally partisan to the Vintage section, an enthusiastic member of the N12 class,

so continued support of all N12 events whatever I happen to be crewing in - but let's face it I'd hardly be in a DCB if the helm wanted to win!!!!

oops there goes my sense of the humorous again

and if the idea of a  WORLD SERIES INDOOR N12 Vintage EVENT  (screened on BBC2)

doesn't grab you, let me tell you about the virtual N12 sailing game........

oops I diverge into the sublime again....

kind regards and see you at Harwich in an old bateau  (combined helm/crew/boat age 158)
