I might be a little biased, but that was good fun!  Shame that the wind did not turn up today.
Thanks to RHYC for organising.

Last year four 12s participated in Bourne End Week over the May Bank Holiday Weekend.  We shared a start line with the Handicap fleet.  There is camping on site.  The club is in a beautiful location on the River Thames in Buckinghamshire.  10 minutes from Junction 3 or 4 of the M40.

Dates this year are Saturday May 28th to Tuesday June 1st.

For the boat geeks come and see a fleet of Thames A Raters battling it out in restricted waters.

The Class are again exhibiting at the RYA Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace on 5/6 March.

There will be one boat on the stand which is a new build wooden 4-Plank version of the Dead Cat Bounce.  The new boat is currently in its final stages of completion and belongs to Stuart Walsh.  The boat has been built by Simon Hipkin in Essex.

There are also more photographs on the N12 facebook page.

We need volunteers to help man the stand.  If you are planning to attend and can devote 1.5 hours to being on the stand and talking to other interested parties that would be fantastic.  If you can volunteer on either Saturday (or particularly Sunday), please send me an email to johnandkaty12@gmail.com

thanks
John Meadowcroft.

Hi

I will be in Brixham from Friday afternoon onwards.  Hoping to go for a sail and then available in evening to measure sails if required.  There should also hopefully be an opportunity to check weigh on Friday, but no promises right now.

I already have Chris Flewitt and Brian Kitching on my list.  Any more?  Would prefer if you got in touch in advance.

For those arriving on Saturday I will be getting progressively less interested in doing things as time gets closer to the start....

If they are P&B sails they are likely "too full".  This is so they have the necessary power to get you downwind.  The logic is that fullness can be removed upwind to get a flatter sail, but it is impossible to put fullness in to a flat sail. You have to remember that the mainsail on a 12 is also your principal downwind sail - it needs to be a spinnaker!  The sail is not too full, it is just sensitive to set up.  Whatever you do to make it flatter upwind you need to be able to reverse to get the power downwind.

The issue can be if it is very light that the sail has too much depth.  On occasion I will rig a simple tackle across the foredeck to pull the mast towards the bow and help remove some fullness.

Sounds like you know which main is best for lighter airs.

Think about what your deck level mast bend control is doing.  This is a pretty vital part of the equation.

Hi Jon and Sarah

Congratulations on your purchase!

Potentially a difficult question to answer online without any photos to ensure that I understand the question being posed.

However, let's have a go.

Firstly, you would only want a little if any pre bend in the mast to start with.  However, you also want a mast that will develop progressive bend.  If it is bending too much already then it will potentially bend excessively.

I dont think spreader length is the answer, it sounds like angle is the issue.  If you pull the spreader tips towards the back of the boat then they will push the mast towards the front.  Length could be an issue if they are less than 340mm long (guessed rather than accurate measurement).

A fun way to play with settings is to roll the boat over on its side and put insulating tape across the shrouds at deck level and from tip to tip of the spreaders.  viewing from the top of the mast you can fiddle with spreader angles to ensure spreaders are equal  and adjust rake.

Given it is a P&B foolish, Tom Stewart @ P&B will have a good set of numbers for you to check to if you cant get what you want this way.

The limitation was proposed on the grounds of practicality and no one involved at the AGM knew of an existing rudder being used on a N12 that would not comply with the rule.  Gavin Willis claimed to be using the largest rudder wing, and no-one contested this!  He suggested that sailing in big waves with such a large piece of kit was "interesting" and that he would be amused to watch anyone try with a larger one.  Gavin seems to have found that the practical limit is actually smaller than has been found.  However, given that first time round with T-foils in the 1990s, the conclusion was that they did not work, he could be wrong.

I disagree with limitations, but there are bigger things to worry about.

Hi Paul

I believe that the Class is stronger together than separately.

I think that a Vintage Championship should be part of a larger event such as the Inland Championship, which should be our best attended event of the year, but which in recent times has not been (despite being in the North of England last year).  I would suggest finding a suitable large reservoir (in Derbyshire as Kevan suggested to you) and making it the venue for the Inland and Vintage Championships next year.

Big decision as to which thread to reply to...

Meadowcrofts coming, and so I believe are Thornton and Brown families.  Going to be lots of noisy children, and that is not counting any Johnson children.
