Title: Ripon SC Gill meeting
Post by: Roly Mo on 28 Aug 2008, 08:37
The penultimate meeting of the 2008 Gill series takes place at Ripon Sailing Club on Saturday 4 October, and the club extends a very warm welcome to the National 12 class for this event.

The first race will be at 11am, with briefing at 10.30am.  There will be 3 races, with 2 to count, and the entry fee is £12.  We are delighted to have our regular OOD, Richard Whiteley, in charge of racing for the day.  The event qualifies for the Gill, Old Spice (Northern) and Vintage series.

Camping is available at the club on Saturday night to allow sailors to enjoy the supper and social after sailing on Saturday  - the bar will be open and well stocked - and to hopefully encourage people to attend the open meeting at nearby Yeadon SC the following day.  Camping is also available on Friday night - anyone wishing to stay on Friday night is asked to get in touch with us so that we can make arrangements for access to the club grounds.

The poster for the event will be on the website shortly, and a briefing note will follow in the next few days.

We look forward to welcoming you to Ripon SC.

Team Roly Mo  :)

Grafham has now been and gone, so Ripon's the next Gill meeting on the calendar!  We are hoping for a great turnout but so far have had very few responses . . . . surely more than Angus, Howard Elock, me and Howard C are coming out to play?

Just under 2 weeks away and less than 10 people intending to be there.  Surely this can't be right?  At the moment it looks like shopping for prizes is going to be easy as we won't need many and the evening meal isn't looking like a clubhouse filler . . . .
If you are intending to come along it would be good if you could let us know - I have to give an idea of numbers for catering purposes at the end of this week.  We also need advance warning if anyone is going to want to camp at the club on Friday night - largely because this means we will need to organise ourselves to be there to let you in.
Looking forward to a veritable flood of postings (but not holding my breath!)
Jennie

Sorry I havn't posted earlier but been working in the US.  Matt and I are planning to come to Ripon and Yeadon and will need to camp, eat and drink Saturday night, possibly Friday also.  Can I let you know about Friday later. It depends when I can get away from the office to how far we get "oop north" on the Friday night

At the moment it looks like we will be down Friday night anyway as we already have one person intending to stay that night.  Would appreciate a call nearer the time so we know whether or not to expect you.

Really hoping to make it to Ripon. Think we need to try sailing this new boat of ours!
We will just do the return journey  in one day so no need for accomodation. Yeadon would be tempting but it is in the wrong direction for us to get home.
Looking forward to it.

For anyone travelling up to Ripon/Yeadon on the A1 from the Deepest South, please be aware that there are significant roadworks around the Stamford & Colsterworth area, due to junction / roundabout reconstruction. Evening traffic jams have been typically 3-4 miles worse on Friday!

The developing Met Office forecast is SW F4/5 (11'C) for Saturday;  which has got to be an improvement over an arctic NNW F6/8 forcast for Friday. Brrrrrr!

Vintage yotters wot I know about include Brian K, Bern if its not too windy for Ellie, Tim G if Sally signs his pass, Brian Herring if his car makes it over the pennines, Vince if its not too windy for Alex and me if I rememember to set my alarm although Andrew Benn is collecting Squidgy Bits in the morning so he will knock me up I guess!
Not heard from but probables include Ian Purkis, Philip David and Gary from Yorkshire Ouse + a few others that may come out to play including you Paul unless vintage the competition is too strong for you and you bring your AC boat.  Forecast on XCweather shows up to 18mph so just right for us oldies!  ;D 8)
STOP PRESS as at 5pm XCweather shows 20-22mph in the afternoon, looks good to me Paul.

What a fantastic turn out - i just wish i had been able to sail. Wind was gusting to 40-50MPH at times  - several boats blown off trolleys and a very busy safety boat.
I'm sure I saw a vintage boat virtually leave the water at one stage (that was just before it capsized) - Graham's camera was out and about - so some video might make it onto the web.

Ripon really is a fantastic venue for 12 sailing - well done to all who organise this event and to the fantastic caterers.

Some fantastic pics on the Ripon SC website, courtesy of Ian Smith - http://www.ripon-sc.org.uk/Gallery/N12_08/N12_2008/index.html (http://www.ripon-sc.org.uk/Gallery/N12_08/N12_2008/index.html) should take you there.  Some really good pics of flying and swimming 12's!

Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in the fun - it was great to have such a lovely fleet for the event.
Mrs RM :)

Fantastic meeting as always. Well worth the drive for what has got to go doen as one of the most challanging open meetings I have ever sailed in.  On thing you always get a Ripon are great pictures as boats flew past the clubhouse.
Thanks to Team Roly MO for their hospitality and looking after us on Friday and Saturday night. I especially liked the bit when we were running the bar late Saturday night!

Thanks to Jennie and Bernard, and the team at Ripon. An excellent well run event. Probably the most challanging conditions we have ever sailed in, but satisfying none the less to get to the end of the day intact!
Be there next year for sure.

Martin,
Email me and I will send you the original picture Chris sent me, as I had to reduce it a lot to get it on the website.
Maybe 28 stone isn't to heavy for a 12 in certain conditions!!

Now that my password is working I'd like to add my thanks to all at Ripon especially Bernard and Jennie for letting me in on the Friday night and for a great days sailing.
PS We also finished all three races without capsizing (one capsize before the start) with less than seventeen stone in the boat(http://www.national12.org/blahdocs/Smilies/grin.gif) so get dieting Simon.
