Title: Potential Jenny Lee Trophy (NWNW)
Post by: Roly Mo on 03 Apr 2009, 07:30
I have spoken to Peter Beck tonight and he says that he thinks that OSSC would be happy to run the Jenny Lee on the evening of Thursday 6 August, with a 7pm start.  We are sailing at Blakeney that morning and Snet isn't till the following morning so it's a free evening.  I have promised Peter (who is going to talk to OSSC's Sailing Sec) that I will get back to him with a response from the class, so who else is up for joining RM/ICM (who might just go Vintage - and I don't mean in terms of sartorial elegance) for a lovely evening sail at this very special venue?

Mrs RM

PS  This leaves Wednesday free for crabbing!

Sounds good to me, it would be a shame not to do Overy Staithe.

On several fronts it would be nice to see all the Twelves that have entered for Norfolk to sail at the Jenny Lee. One it is their sixtieth anniversary and the Twelves have been to each and every week since its inception. Two, we are the only fleet that are invited to sail at this wonderful Norfolk venue. Three and on a purely selfish point, Overy Staithe has some wonderful memories that range from death and destruction when a line squall came through, enjoying Mrs. Plume's fruit from her nearby farm to seeing one of my brothers disappear up to his neck in water as he was wading his boat down the incoming torrent of water sluicing up the creek. If you are going to Norfolk and have not ever done the Jenny Lee, have a go and you will see why so many people enjoy sailing there.

Sorry, forgot to add this to my last bit. Overy Staithe is the ideal place for the amall kids to have crab fishing competitions and races before the big kids have their race on the water. RM and I will have to work out some sort of handicapping system (we will have to be careful if it is worked out on age and or experience of Norfolk as that would mean that Jerry and Patrick would have to weigh their crabs in by the ton!). The use of exotic baits such as Parma Ham will immediately lead to disqualification.

I like the idea.  Blakeney is 0715 and Snet is 0700.  We shall ask the babysitters - it will be pretty full on for them!

It is a wonderful venue for a family night out - the chance to walk along the path and watch the sailing and then crab and/or picnic whilst you wait for the boats to come back.  Definitely worth encouraging baby sitters to come along and join the fun for at least the start of the evening.
On the basis of support to date I will get back in touch with Peter and say it looks like we have a fleet.

I have written to Peter and Melba tonight saying that the fleet accepts OSSC's very kind offer and that we are looking forward to our sail at Overy very much indeed.

Yes, we're definitely up for it, the babysitter will never know it wasn't part of the original assignment (as long as none of you lot tell her that is). Do crabs like cheese?

I always found bacon the best, but that was some years ago.

Only the vegetarian ones. They really like bacon bones best.

For anyone who has not been to Norfolk Week, i would suggest having a look at the webcams for the north Norfolk coast. The one at Wells looks back over the main bit of the harbour, the one at Overy Staithe looks downstream from Peter Becks and the one at Blakeney looks down the cut. Check them out at low tide for a laugh and you will understand what folk mean when they talk about sailing over wet grass at Norfolk. Nothing much to report on them at the minute, just a the odd car milling around at Blakeney.

It always seemed shallower at high tide, when you were sailing over something that was never meant to be river at all.

Can we enter this race on it's own (+Hunstanton if they accept our entry) as we come straight from work and be ready for a 7.00pm start?

The Jenny Lee is a very special event which welcomes all 12's, including those not doing the rest of the week,  and isn't charged for as part of the main NWNW event.  Just come along and join in - everyone at OSSC will be delighted to see you.  Have you sailed there before?  Top tip is not to leave your car on the hard as it frequently floods at high tide!
ICM - I have just noted a red car driving away at Blakeney . . . .

I suspect ICM, either in person or via the Old Man of the Sea, has the answer to this one!

Jenny Lee used to sail Twelves a long time ago sat at the front of them for a variety of people. Sadly she died of cancer some years ago. I believe that she had some sort of connection with the Norfolk area, but Tricia Wood will tell you more about her than I can as she was good friends with her before she died.
