Title: Vintage Inland Champs 2013
Post by: paul turner on 12 Nov 2012, 01:41
Greetings All!

I am delighted to report that the N12 VINTAGE WORLD INLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS are to be held at Foremark Reservoir, South Derbyshire, courtesy of Burton Sailing Club on the weekend of 29th/30th June 2013.

Vintage definition = wooden and clinker (not the age of the helm or crew!)

The event details are being worked up at the moment but may well include three Derwent Handicap races on the Saturday, a nostalgic magic lantern show on the Saturday night, concours judging, and three races on the Sunday with separate trophies for clinker and ribbed boats - but any other suggestions are welcome!

To help with planning, please let us know if you intend joining us for this new event on the N12 calendar - and whether you will be sailing, watching or would like to borrow a vintage boat to sail. Please post here or email me direct. Px :K)

Hi Paul, I will endeavour to come but you have picked rather a bad weekend for me as Scottish school holidays start around that time, It is also dependant on Reflection staying together for more than 20 minutes at a time! I don't think my new boat would be welcomed.

Hi Simon Assuming that you  have a towbar I may be able to help with a proven fast vintage boat that could be collected from a market town near you!  That assumes that I get my finger out and put the fittings back on my China Doll, a long threatened job that will only take a couple of days but has been pending for the last year!  Give me a call sometime.  Howard C (number in the book if not in your phone)  PS  Paul yes we will be coming along too crew and boat TBC. 8):P

If anyone would like to sail a ribby at this event - I currently have four fully restored and race rigged with a fifth (a new build Uffa King) nearing completion.

N341 Uffa King (1938)

N493 Laughter - Jack Holt's 19Burton Cup Winner (his Holt 500's were developed from this mould)

N711 Sinner - a Gnome design

N1183 - one of the last ribbed Proctor Mk11's to be built

N3541 - new build Uffa King (using trad materials and methods)

Please contact me direct via email or phone (07944 300749) if you are interested in sailing one on one or both days of the event

Hi

It was good to see and talk to so many 12 sailors at the RYA Dinghy Exhibition this weekend.

There was much interest in the N12 Vintage Inland Championships being held in late June and quite a few owners are now keen to dust off the vintage Twelves they have in storage ready for the event.

The likes of the Camm's and Meadowcrofts are also keen to be included in the fun so there could be a really broad mix of crews in attendance from across the 12 fleet.

Boats - ribbed and non-ribbed are available to loan from the extensive Northern & Midlands fleets for those who would like to participate but who don't own a vintage craft

To help with organization, if you haven't already done so please indicate below if you plan to attend and whether or not you would like to borrow a vintage 12 for the event.

It looks like it's going to be a great weekend - don't miss it.

Does any one know if there is camping at the club or areas by?

Simon
There will be camping and camper van space and there is no need to book in advance.  Camping is on an area next to the Club, on a first come first served basis, but they have not run out of space yet, albeit it might be a bit cosy!  Camper vans will be accommodated on the car park.

Simon. Camping will be available on Friday night as long as you turn up early.  There are some sailing activities taking place then and someone could meet you and arrange for a key.  The site will be locked so a key is needed for emergencies.  Nearer the time we would need to know names of those wishing to camp on Friday.

Unfortunately i am not going to be able to make it. She who does not get her feet wet has managed to book the family holiday for that weekend, which is rather what I expected would happen. Reflection is available for anybody who would like to borrow her but you will have to come and collect her!

A very last minute thing I know, but we are going to have tee-shirts available to order for delivery to the event.  They will be appearing very soon on the National 12 bit of the waveprint.co.uk website and you can choose from Polo Shirts (adults) or tee shirts (juniors).  Adam has very kindly agreed to take orders up until Wednesday and we will then go and collect the goods and bring them to Burton SC.  The design is based on the Brixham design but with the event title changed (obviously!!).  Now to get back to the demonly dastardly quiz!

the event Tee Shirts are now on line at waveclothing.co.uk under the N12 tab.  Great souvenirs, which will be delivered FOC to Burton SC on Saturday morning.  Please order by Tuesday night to ensure we can get them from the printers in time.

We are still hovering between 15 and 19 boats - really would like to get 20 on the start line!

Even if you can't get your vintage yot ready in time do join us anyway on either day, or even come along to the Saturday night BBQ, Quiz and Picture Show - please let me know if you are coming along to help plan catering.

I have been trying to find an alternative scot to bring Reflection along but so far have failed.  Mainly to keep an eye on Mr. Willet and mark my words he needs keeping an eye on to make sure he does not take advantage of any poor innocent Sassanach.:P

Oh wow, what a weekend!  The club made us SO welcome, the weather was just about perfect and we've come home thinking 'that was one of the best weekends we've had this year'.  Thank you to everyone who made it happen, and let's do it again!

A big "thank you" to all who sailed at, spectated during, or helped to run the Vintage Inland Champs at the weekend - I think it was a great success but let's see what peeps have to say. We did have some brilliant weather and great sailing!

A special mention to Kevan & Janet who did all the important behind the scenes paperwork stuff, Nick Gill for the sponsorship and presenting the prizes, Tim Gatti (PA and projector), Jennie Clark (Quiz), Kevan (again - photos) and huge "thank you" to Burton Sailng Club (especially Craig Hellon and Bill Hooton) for making us all so welcome and running things so efficiently!

And a "thank you" in advance to Jeremy who has volunteered to do a big write up (which may well include the word "ironic"!) I think that some photos and some video fooptage may also appear.

I'm going to have a lie down now! Px 8)

I'd echo that and add another big 'thank you' to you too 'Mr T' for all your efforts in pulling/putting it all together, and lending out your vintage yots and arranging the wonderful weekend weather. Don't know how you do it.

Bigger and even better next year.

Hopefully we can get more ribbies out to compete for the Gill Admiral's Cup Trophy - four available for loan from my collection including Jack Holt's 1946 Burton Cup winner - 'Laughter' N493. All fully kitted out and ready to go. (Book early to avoid disappointment!)

Definitely the best weekends sailing this year, sun and breeze, I'd forgotten that was possible in England. And on top of that we got  N1650 Smuggler up on the plane! Many thanks of Paul for organising the weekend and lending us one the Turner Collection. Glad we managed to return her in one piece (well mostly...) I was a little worried with the breeze Sunday afternoon.

Hear, hear. What a great weekend and thanks to Paul for the loan of what is arguably the quickest of his vintage collection or even the quickest vintage.
Kevan's photos are great and well worth a look, they really show what fantastic conditions we had.

Pity I can't sail Dolly as fast as you can! :-/

But seriously, thank you for all your comments and the constructive suggestions; there seems to be strong support for making this an annual event. I will post a proposed revised programme for comment when all the feedback is in. We did budget for 20 boats and so I suspect that we will make a small financial loss this year; we would want to have a few more competitors next time.
