Rick,

Good question!

From experience, whilst people plan to do events the actual decision isn't made until they look at the weather forecast on the Friday before the event............. Helps the organising club's planning no end!

Having so said we are hoping for 10 boats. And for the first time in over 5 years I won't be here for a Salcombe open meeeting - hospital beckons to start getting the knees sorted out at last.

John!

Good luck with the knee op. And welcome back to the N12 fleet!

Jim N3130 (Wood if I could)

P.S. You didn't choose this boat because of the symmetry of number did you?  ;)

Nah!

I have always liked Bouncers, its got a daggerboard, had a double floor retro fitted and looks like new!

A couple of thoughts;

Anyone done a costing / show whats involved in converting an AC to a DB or some sort of hybrid - may help to promote sails of the older ACs.

Secondly - how much 'Pimp my 12' can you get away with?  If a D-board is not legal today - can you re-build the 12 around the existing boat - some sort of conversion of say a Bouncer to a Numinous say (keeping the same registration certificate)?

Kean
Not intending to re-build

Kean,
Both good questions.
1.  The answer is to ask Derek Davis or Steve Lightfoot, as these are the two people that have done their own conversions.  Derek is still involved in the class, or will be when once again when he gets his new boat wet.  Alternatively, ask Mike Cooke for a quote!  From talking to Steve years ago it is a fiddly job but not as difficult as it initially sounds.
2.  If you change the hull shape it is my view that the boat would need to be re-measured.  If a boat with a daggerboard is re-measured it will not be a N12 as it has the banned daggerboard.   This has not yet been tested, as Derek promises that he did not change the hull shapee and it certainly still looks like a Bouncer, and it is my hope that it never will be.

More generally there have, to my mind, be very few serious efforts to take weight out of decent AC boats and/or fit more buoyancy or a floor.  It is a shame as they are the boats that bridge the gap between AC and DB.

All interesting stuff - but back on topic who is will be at Salcombe?

I have only ever seen the 12 we own and figure it would be nice to see some others but I don't fancy a 550 mile round trip to sail with 5 other boats ...

I would go to the GWSC meeting if I could make it but I am involved with Musto Skiff Coaching that weekend.

So ... how many boats will be their (rough guesses ...)

Rick,
I think that John Murrell was being pretty realistic with his best guess of 10.  The big Open at Salcombe is in May, and so this one has never had a great support.  There are about 5-6  local boats and then probably 5-6 including David that will make the trip.

Grafham is obviously the big one, it is a shame that you cannot make it as there were a couple of things I was interested in discussing with you (ironically including training!).

Rick,

So far I have commitments from one of our local boats, David Wilkins and Will Henderson are planning to come down and show everyone the way round! As I have said, getting people to pre-enter in the Twelve class is a nightmare!

Oh well such is the task of sailing club administration!!

It will be good to see you down here in Salcombe, Rick and at the very least you are guaranteed to beat at least one boat.... (mine)

I'm affraid I can only make Sunday but I'm unlikely to check any forecasts before I leave as I'm feeling withdrawal symptoms having missed the Regatta this year!

Looking forward to a brilliant day!

Try Brian and Nola,
They are up at the top but it means you will have not trouble leaving a trailer outside and they are very friendly.  Otherwise try the tourist information, lots on there.

Cheers!

Unfortunately we cannot be there.  I have never known sailing cancelled at Salcombe due to too much wind but there could always be the first time...  3 or 4 years ago we had a real demolition derby in strong breeze.  NOt sure what the tides are, I guess you will get the full range, but launching at low tide from the dinghy park in lots of breeze from any (and definitely from the wrong direction) will be as challenging as it gets - despite flat water there is limited space and there would be some pretty tasty gusts.

Salcombe provides super windy sailing.  I am jealous.

Meds!

Come over in August 2007 right after BW. You were there  at  Salcombe this season weren't you? Unfortunately, this time didn't have a boat but John pressganged me into marshalling on Monday. I got a few nice photos out in the bag, in spite of the pesky solos and lasers going through the ICC kids boats at the Saltstone and making me work for my money...

Your boat's Max Factor, right? I'll have a dig around. I've got a few of Texas Flood too.

Jim N3130 (soon 3470 too - both wood :D)

But they are not made of wood?
What were you doing taking photos of not wooden objects?! were you feeling ok?

Jon_P.

Listen, it's my personal choice and there's no accounting for taste - take Mikey C's cosmetic carbon (for stocking tops?)...

Anyways, Meds is the deputy Chairman....  ;) ;) Who knows, maybe there'll be  a meeting in Bavaria in 2008....

Report from one who wasn't there, but sitting in a hospital bed!

Sailing wasn't cancelled - abandoned on Saturday as the safetyboats were flying around picking up bits of boats but......................

Most got repaired and on Sunday 2 races were got in!
Overall Will and Mary Henderson were first, Keri Harris with his daughter and one of the SYC Cadets second, Gavin nad Jasmine Willis third and David Wilkind and Adele Cameron fourth.

More than that I have yet to find out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I have one titanium knee now!

Saraturday we launched and arrived on the start line in some quite strong breeze.

Our mast ram buckeled up and we turned for home and the race was abandoned a few minuets later.

IMHO it was too windy to sail and there were few broken Solos although a few finished.

On Sunday the forcast was bad but we started anyway.

We were having a good race in 3rd until some serious breeze arrived; we had a monster run but eventually span out and decided it was all too much.

Will Hendersen won, Gavin was second and David was 3rd I think there were no other finishers.

All teh visitors then packed in - I am not anyone finished the 2nd race.

Keri sailed with his 8 year old daughter Freya for race 1 and 2, but after 5 capsizes Freya very sensibly mutinied.  My son Tom then shamelessly abandonned my boat in favour of Keri's for race 3.   Seems these kids have their heads screwed on the right way!

The wind was outrageously strong and I've never sailed so fast in my life.  My wife (heavyweight crew) had also mutinied, leaving me with 10 year-old Peter to help hold the boat down.  I just had to do the run down to No.7 on the second time around even though I knew I didn't have the stamina or the crew weight (or more realistically, the ability) to get back up through the Bag again.

Norman and Karen in Moby Quick bust their mast in a gust which blew out their jib window and capsized the whole fleet.  The 3 rescue boats worked flat out recovering 12's and Solos but everyone seemed to be grinning.  I didn't finish a single race, but I loved it!

We took the video camera down and planned to take it out in the rescue boats but the boats were too busy rescueing.  We didn't dare take the camaera out of the waterproof bag...its hard to describe just how wet the weekend was!

Yeah!

Dad said it was chucking it down at the weekend! Not to worry! When we come down next I'll bring an old diving camera with me and take some pice from the boat, then get the negs scanned in. That way everything stays watertight...

Cheers!

Despite the lack of finishing I enjoyed the weekend - very friendly people and a nice spot to visit; must be hell in the summer with all the crowds though.

I can say without doubt that is the strongest winds I have sailed in for some time. The run to 7 the second time was great; we only had a short distsance to go when te span out - not sure what we could have done.

Probably too windy for racing but worth a go as we'd driven so far.

Thanks to SYC.

We only got there for Sunday.

Did the first race - Will & Aurther stole the start and lead round the first mark  - we were resaonably comfortably 2nd untill a monster gust tipped us in to windward  - took a while to get sorted and going again. Started catching the middle of the fleet a bit  but went and fell in mid tack going through the bag on the way back.
2nd run to no7 we did with the plate down - too scared to go forward to put it up! A few little wobbles but we got there and back. There were lots of Solos lying in the water near the buoy.

Standing on the beach waiting for the 3rd race started to feel more like standing under a fireman's hose! Thought the only takers were us and Will - there didn't seem to be much enthusiasm for another race in either boat so we headed back towards Batson planing under the jib alone occassionaly. Should have waited a bit longer on the beach and would have realised that there was a race to be had ! I gather it was a very brief one to Blackstone and back.

Great to be sailing a Salcombe again which will always be one of my all time favorites!

Cheers
