Title: Salcombe Gill Open Meeting
Post by: JohnMurrell on 07 Mar 2008, 02:55
I have put he NOR and Entry Forms on the Salcombe website today - www.salcombeyc.org.uk (http://www.salcombeyc.org.uk)
For the evening social entertainment I have ogranised a Pie, Chips and Stittles evening for Saturday   and on Sunday Spud Rowsell has been volunteered to give a short talk titled ' Twelve's when I were a boy!' should be very amusing and then there will be the traditional Salcombe carvery to round the evening off.
Boats will be kept at Batson Boatpark for the weekend and there will be no charge for boats in the boatpark Saturday am  to Monday afternoon, however if you are planning on arriving early / staying on for a few days there may be a charge made. Also the Salcombe Harbour Master will not be charging Harbour Dues for the event, thanks Ian!
There are a number of B&B's in Salcombe and it appears that they are filling fast, however I have spoken to the Squires at Higher Rew camp Site and they will charge £9.00 a night for a camping pitch (car, tent, 2 adults and accompanied kids). Give Sue Squire a call on 01548 842681 to book your pitch and mention that you are coming to the Salcombe 12 open meeting and she will try to keep everyone together.

And the one thing I forgot was entries....................................................
Those who know the Salcombe set up will realise that entrying in advance saves everyone a lot of hassle!!!! We don't charge extra for entries on the day but if you can let me at least know you are coming it helps to make sure that:
a) there is enough space put aside in the boatpark to accomodate everyone
b) and most importantly, we have enough beer and food to keep everyone happy!

I am now really looking forward to going sailing in my 12 in the warm and sunny conditions of Salcombe.
John, do you have any more details about the timing of the socials?  This might seem a strange question, but i was wondering if either night was going to begin in time to bring the children to the first part of it and then take them home.  Having sorted out the accomodation i am now thinking about the babysitting!
p.s.  Where is that entry form you were going on about?

I found my own answer to the second question, and a partial answer to my first!!

It sounds like the property rental companies have started to negotiate weekend rates with people (they hold back in the hope of getting a full week rental and then give in!), so the cost for the 3-4 nights is less than they quote on their websites.  It might make a house in Salcombe work out cheaper than you expect......
The two main companies are Coast & Country Cottages and Salcombe Holiday Homes.

Time to get those entry forms in.  I strongly suspect that more people are planning their trip to Salcombe, or indeed have booked a house etc. than have managed to put a cheque in the post to John.

We are going to be there ... and Antony is right we have not yet managed to get the cheque to JM. We also hear that there will be an entrant for the long running "swiftest return from childbirth to sidedeck" competition joining us on the water.
Looking forward to seeing lots of you there.

I'll be there but still have to sort crew, car and accom issues - minor stuff. Let's hope spring has made it in the next couple of weeks!

We'll be there. Had the practice run this weekend, going to the parents in law (1.5 hr drive, slept all the way there and back). Brilliant.
Accom booked, parents in law as babysitters booked, cheque in the post today. Looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to make our first trip to salcombe in a 12.  Only dropped the boat off at P&B today to replace the bannana mast and to put the 2 carbon booms I now have back into 1 useful one! Well it was quite a large gust a Bristol, just as I was bearing away.... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.  Must thank Craftinsure for agreeing to pay the bill!
If all gets repaired OK should make it to Hykeham.
Have fun without us

Yay, I'm going to Salcombe and actually sailing for the first time in a few years! - probably a  bit late for pre-entering now, sorry John..

Would be interested if anybody has some spare places in a house that they'd like to fill?

Cheers

Nearly Salcombe time!  For those not familiar with the venue there is one thing to know/remember before you arrive:
Your boat needs to be at Batson Boat Park (follow the signs that might also say long-term car park), the usual practice is to leave it with the other 12s wherever they are congregated.  SYC have persuaded the nice men there not to charge us for boat parking over the weekend.
As it is a 3 day event there is more time than usual to chat/tune/quiz others, so anybody that wants advice on their 12 or how they sail it please feel free to approach anybody that looks confident/competant about what they are doing.  We like to think that we are a very friendly class, but friendliness can sometimes appear cliquey and it is important that we remember that!  The car park is a good place to seek advice, especially on Saturday morning, as is the club bar.
See you there, the entries are looking good.. or would if all the people i know are going to the event had sent their cheques to John!!

Looking forward to it a lot.  I am also guilty of not managing to co-ordinate entry form, cheque book, envelope, stamp and pen to be in the same place at the same time.  I have the utmost respect for those of you that have managed this and I promise to enter on Friday evening in the bar if you are around John or at the first opportunity.  Promise not to leave it to the prize giving.

Rounders on the beach 12.30 Sunday.  I'll bring the bat.  (Looking at the tides there will be plenty of beach).

See you all there.

Love Fran

I am really jealous of all of you as I will not be able to join in the fun - very dull exams 2 days later so really can't justify 3 days off from the books.  Currently bored stupid by staring at books and a computer screen and trying not to think about the nice time you will all be having....:'( (But at least I get my life back for the rest of the summer in a only a weeks time - yippee!)

John

That was a great weekend and some terrific racing.  Salcombe is a fabulous venue for a Gill meeting.  Thanks very much to you and all the team at SYC.  See you in August.

Its John Meadowcrofts new boat, based on Gavin Willis' 'Paradigm' design - its modified from that - maybe just a Paradigm 2, unless they call it a new name.
Nice colour!
