Title: Burton entries
Post by: Dare Barry (Guest) on 17 Mar 2009, 06:23
Following the fantastic burst of early entries we now have 49 boats paid up to sail. If you are not one of the early entries but are definitely coming, your confirmation asap would be very helpful. If as we hope the entry still has a way to go there will be organisation issues to be sorted out.  Rescue boats ect.
Many thanks Dare Barry

there will be a contingent from Olton Mere there, at least one boat.
Foxi is bringing one of the Puddings down for a play, and it looks like I will be crewing, but there is a chance there might be another, if the crews are willing, I might bring Gordon down so you can all marvel at just how much duct tape is needed to hold an old 12 together.
I think that will hit the 50... 8)

I am still planning on it - 90%, a local chandler is willing to sponsor me the entry fee so I'm waiting on that being sorted otherewise i'd have been entered before now! Plus i know the boat floats now ;)...

Oh well - last Burton Week was 1997 - I said that was it for me - and we have now entered and booked some accommodation for Thorpe bay.  In a strange kind of way, looking forward to it ...

Does anybody know of anyone interested in crewing at Thorpe Bay. I am keen to have a go in the Admirals Cup fleet but am short of a crew.

Kevin Iles is the man to get in touch with, he knows of various potential crews from the club (one of whom is sailing with me).

Any update on Numbers for Burton week? Web page still shows 49... tantilisingly close to 50.
From discussions at Burghfield we are well passed that.  Is that official?
Simon
still waiting for the post form Hunstanton!

Simon,
We do now have over fifty entries for Burton Week, but I have been holding off updating the website as I do not have the final numbers at present or the permissions from the entrants to publicise their entries (Data protection and all that!)

As soon as I have it I will update with more accurate figures

Freya and I shall be entering with Silver Fin.  I just need to get organised with the entry form and put some pressure on the Salcombe fleet to join in! K

Just a reminder to those still talking about entering for BW. At the end of April the entry fee rises by £20.00 for late entry so get your entries in now!

We are also going to be limited to 120 seats for the Burton Week dinner so ensure that if you want to come you book this now too as we would hate for you to be disappointed.

Just so we are prepared is there a dress code for the Burton dinner?

Martin, the basic answer to your question is no.  There is often a dinner jacket in evidence as well as a few in jeans.  Most of us opt for something in between!

White tie and tiaras are de rigeur - anything less and you may feel a little out of place.

I will keep my tiara at home, dont want it ruined in the tent!!;)
I might struggle to get my teenager into anything other than jeans, but I might a bit of an effort. 8)

Thanks

Confirmation of a second boat from olton now turning up.
I have secured a crew, just need to choose the boat to bring down.  Do I go for Gordon, and prey for a drifter, token gesture, the best all rounder, or the street legal and hope it blows old boots all week.  Anyone got a triple stacker I can borrow?

Send me your e-mail address Chopper. My Baggy 2 had been the mainstay of introducing two of my three daughters into sailing with me from the age of 9 onwards, very competitively. Why not borrow it for Burton week and see if the glove fits.
E-mail me at gavin@willisses.co.uk (mailto:gavin@willisses.co.uk) if you would like to explore the possibilities.

a baggy would be better for the sea sailing too, so I would be grabbing that offer with both hands. even if you do not end up with that boat for yourself for home club, it is worth the trial for the week.

to be honest, does it matter if you are not at the front of the fleet in your first 12?  I find my baggy easy to handle in the rough stuff, a lot better than the cheshire, which is a more competative light wind boat.  if it means you can go out in higher winds because of the additional righting moment, isn't it a good trade off?

Are we still on only 48 entries? The list seems to have stuck at that figure for several weeks now. And only 5 vintage yots? Come on boys and girls - get sorted and enter now! Px :K)

Paul, the entry now stands at 54 and we will be able to update the Burton web page shortly. For those of you still to enter you have until the 30th April to get your entry form to Janet before the late entry fee kicks in.

I have just heard latest entry total from Janet. As a today the entry is 68, this is the largest entry since we had 69 at Royal Harwich in 1996.

Dare,
If that is what Janet says then i am not going to argue, but i thought we had more in Weymouth in 1998.  I have 77 in my mind but i don't trust that too much.
Such quibbles take nothing from the fact that 68 is a good number and i am assuming that since it includes few if any of the last minute loans that Kevin, John and I are trying to arrange we should break 70 with no trouble at all.

Perhaps we better start reminding ourselves what a Gate start is all about.  Haven't done one of those since Tynemouth 85!

NO PLEASE, NO MENTION OF GATE STARTS!!!!! This is an amazing number of boats. I am feeling really bad for not being able to be there. Hope it all goes well.

Maybe there will be some talk about venues for future Burton weeks soon!!!

Right I have my tiara and long white gloves sorted for the dinner - but I think I'm going to get thinking about which N12 to dress up as this year.  Why did I let my mother take our "dressing up box" down to the charity shop..
See you all in approx. 18days :)

browsing through the boat listings there is a boat called "Pip"  - so you could always go as yourself if nothing else comes to mind!

"Baffled of Breaston" here! The website still says that only 48 have entered - but word is that we have 60+ going to the Burton? ??)

I’ll tell you a secret, the website doesn’t get updated every 10 minutes because it’s done by volunteers in their spare time.

Dear Ffabled of Restanob, (we like to confuse people)

Confirmed entries are now at least 71 and I know of two more definite ones on the way. The web-site is a little out of date - don't blame me for that one, I do not control it.

The club is stocking up on beer, food, beer, more safety boats, beer, longer rope to cordon off the dinghy park, beer, longer results sheets, beer and some ale.

Pip and Jane,

I am not an expert on male totty, perhaps the two of you would explain to me what it is that you find insufficient in the specimens that you each sail with so I don't make any errors in trolley dolly recruiting. Based on your explanations, Terry and I can then also decide whether we should then be looking for crews with better tastes in helms!

Ooooooooh nooooo,  not gate starts!  Did a Merlin champs a few years ago with 84 on the line, no trouble once the black flag was flown and the number whittled down to 60 or less!  For myself with boat weighing in at 250llbs and seive like sails, I need to take a run at the line so can some of you look over your shoulder and let me in please as I would hate it if my 40llb honed hardened steel centre plate were to slice through your transom.  Yep, Stephen Potter tactics at work already!
