Vintage National Twelves at Derwent Reservoir

A competitive fleet of Vintage (ie, clinker-built) National Twelves met at Derwent Reservoir, Northumberland, on Sept.1 for the annual racing for the J.& T. Hancock Trophy and the Witchcraft Bailer, Series Trophy. Winds were medium to fresh. The first race, a scratch race, was won comfortably by Howard Chadwick and Helen Nicholson, followed by Peter Roe and Helen Bird (2nd) and Howard Elcock and Robert Aal. The second and third races were handicap races, using the host club's system and handicaps established on the results of the first race. Chadwick managed to overcome the penalty of the late start to win the second, with Elcock narrowly beating Roe. In the third race, Chadwick was unable to catch Roe but passed all the other boats.
